Major reflux after Sleeve and herna repair

Recommended Posts

Oh dear, I am at a loss here. I was so looking forward to having a Gastric Sleeve surgery in late June, but when i called to set the surgery up the doctor's assistant asked if I have acid reflux. I believe I do, especially when I eat the wrong foods or food combinations. No heartburn or extreme discomfort, just a slight tightness in my throat and a feeling of belching or burping with a little bit of acid (I think) coming up from time to time. the tightness almost feels like there is an air bubble caught in my throat. i am a lifelong diet soft drink user, which i am sure does not help much. I am going to be straight up with my bariatric doctor about this. I recently had a full gastro intestinal exam including the test where they put a tube down my throat to my stomach and the one where they put a tube up your rear to your stomach. they found 3 pre-cancerous polyps in my colon. I was just wondering if anyone can shed some light on this. I really wanted to have the sleeve done. My conversation with the doctors assistant yesterday was a real bummer.

@@Diane Liggett - Are you self pay? If not why not set up a consultation with the bariatric surgeon. Part of the preop process is either an Upper GI or EGD. Either one would acess you reflux issues and let you know whether you would be a good candidate for sleeve surgery. The other option then would be bypass, which from my understanding does cause issues with reflux.

@@BLERDgirl thank you for your response. i am self pay, but it would seem to me i could go to a Gastrointernologist or ear nose and throat doctor and get either an Upper GI test or EGD done. Thank you for the input. I have heard so many wonderful things about the Gastric Sleeve especially in regulating appetite that I had always though I wanted the Gastric Sleeve over the bypass surgery. This may be my only alternative though. :-( We'll see.

If you are self pay it does make sense to get the testing done and present that to the bariatric surgeon. They can then advise if sleeve or bypass is a better option. I hope something works out for you.

I had gastric sleeve and hernia repair on Feb 5th 2015. The first week I felt great, come the 2nd week oh boy!!! I had to go back to my Dr for an upper endoscopy because my stomach is inflamed and full of bile. He put me on yet another medication and said if it doesn't work we would have to do a by-pass over the sleeve. The bile makes it extremely painful to eat or drink and gurgles in my throat. And the nausea is horrible. Has anyone else had this issue and what have your Dr's suggested??? Thank you

I am curios as to why you would have to do something as drastic as having another surgery and do a bypass? I was just given to option to switch from sleeve to bypass but its because I have had a leak for 8 months that is not healing and I am very sick. Was even in the ICU on a breathing tube, etc Good luck to you!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
