I have decided that I want to have RYN bypass and I have set up an appointment for my free seminar 01/08. I have my primary physician behind me a 110%. I just want to know what all else you have to go through before you get your surgery date?

It can be a long process. Here are the steps I went through.

* Initial consultation, met with surgeon and down-select on type of surgery

* Assessment by psychologist

* 6 months of medically supervised weight loss and exercise program

* Approval by my insurance company

* Extensive pre-op physical

* A detailed class describing preparation for surgery and vitamin/liquid/protein/meal requirements after surgery

* Several follow-on tests for problems uncovered during the pre-op physicals

* Final approval for surgery and the date was set

I had already been in weight watchers for the entire year previous to my initial consult, so that counted as my 6 months supervised weight loss effort.. After that:

1. 2 NUT consultations

2. Psych evaluation

3. letter of necessity from my primary doctor

4. endoscopy

5. colonoscopy

6. hematology consult

The last three because I have had anemia issues. I think that was it for me. I had my first visit 9/8/14. I submitted the middle of October. and was approved two weeks later.

Awesome!! I was planing 4 to 5 months I just don't want it to take a year to get to the surgery!!

I went to my first seminar on Dec 22, 2013, first consult with my surgeon on the 21st of January, 2014 with surgery the 18th of March. 9 months later I'm down 85 lbs and almost at goal. BCBS of Illinois doesn't have the 6 month weight management requirement (not all require this) so I didn't have to worry about that. Testing went smoothly. Every insurance and surgeons office has different requirements. Your surgeons office works closely with insurances, they know exactly what you'll have to do. Mine gave me a check list telling me what to do first, second, ect. They included phone numbers, Dr. names, basically everything I needed to get my pre-requisites done. Good luck. You'll do awesome as long as you stay positive. :)

      Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

        As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

        Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

        Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

      Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
