Hypothroidism, has it limited your weight loss with sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I have chronic hypothyroidism with very little long term weight loss success. Who has had the sleeve with this medical issue and what has your weight loss experience been?

I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (autoimmune disorder that causes hypo) and I was sleeved Dec. 18th. So far, I've been doing okay with the loss. I was 20 lbs down on my 10 day appointment, and the doc said that was a good amount for the time period.

Still early days though.

I would be happy with 20 lbs in 10 days. I have never been able to do that any other way! I have maintained a consistent weight within 10 lbs for years. All weight loss plans have been unsuccessful! I have had a trainer for a year! I have nice muscles under my fat! Hoping the sleeve will help me with weight loss portion!

@@uni2424 I do not have a thyroid due to papillary cancer. So I am definitely Hypo. I lost 60 pounds prior to getting the sleeve on 12/16. I've lost another 14 with the sleeve. It is very possible to lose weight with hypothyroidism. Just need to make sure you are being followed by an endocrinologist, get blood work done periodically, have your meds adjusted and take your meds correctly. I lost the 60 pounds by eating a less than 1200 calorie diet and exercising on a regular basis. My weight loss was a little slow and had frequent stalls...you just have to be committed to changing your lifestyle.

I have had to go up on my thyroid meds three times in the past year and a half. My blood work over the summer was the worst yet. During my two week pre-op liquid diet, I purposely cut back drastically. I consumed only 600 calories and walked 6 miles daily. When I hopped on the scale before surgery, I was terribly annoyed that I only lost 8 pounds. Even though I starved myself and never cheated once.

Well, it got much better after surgery. I duplicated my pre-op diet the first two weeks post op (walking half a mile instead of six miles daily) and lost 20 pounds. I am almost 3 months post op and have had good progress so far. My thyroid is still under active and I fear that I will have to really kick it in overdrive once I hit maintenance.

I too have hypothyroidism. I am six months out and have lost 101 pounds. I feel great. Prior to surgery I was on 250mcg of Synthroid, now I only take 137mcg. I think it is possible to be successful with this surgery and live with hypothyroidism. I make sure that I eat my Protein first, then any veggies I want. I do not eat any sugar, bread, rice. I avoid carbs completely. I did splurge at the holidays and feasted on some sugary treats. Good luck to you on your surgery and weight loss. You can do it.

I also have hashimoto's disease. I haven't had surgery yet but I'm also concerned how it will effect my weight loss after surgery. Keep us posted how this progress for you.

This is good news as I have hypothyroidism and am currently taking 275 mcg. I was concerned that my weight loss would be very slow. Your posts are very encouraging. I will post after my surgery hopefully next month. My paperwork will be submitted Jan 20. Then the process of waiting for approval.

following this as I'm hypo too.

I unfortunately still am in the "normal" range for TSH but luckily have found a dr willing to test levels regularly and treat my symptoms (total lack of energy).

I've gained the 80lbs I need to lose all in the last 5-7 years and havent even had kids yet so I'm desperate to lose weight (thus why looking into WLS)

I understand the frustration b/c I do eat healthy (just finished yeast-free (gluten/sugar/dairy) diet of 2 months with ZERO weight loss) and work out. SO hopeful WLS will be able to help me too!

I know this thread is a month old but wanted to chime in,because I searched the Internet for this exact same answer before surgery.

I am almost 4 months out and have lost 50lbs (15 in my two week preop). So I am not losing fast by any means but I am losing.2 dress sizes down and some clothes 3 sizes down.

It is possible to lose with hypothyroid, no regrets.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
