Pre op diet frustration!

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone - so I've been on my pre op diet since December 19th. I lost 7 lbs in the first week ( one shake and 2 tiny no carb meals.) since I started full liquids last fri ( 26th) I haven't lost an OUNCE???? This is very frustrating to me!!! days of hard dieting and being perfect for nothing. Ugh! My body hates me. I'm drinking my Water, taking supplements 2 shakes a day and broth and tea.

Any advise from veterans? Has anyone experienced this???

7lbs. in one week? That sounds great to me!

Surgery will make this much easier.

I agree the 7lbs was great! It's just weird as soon as I started liquids the weight stalled.

Sounds like the metabolism hasn't caught up with the changes yet. Your body may be holding onto every little calorie while it adjust to the changes in your diet. Hang in there!

Typically your body will have a difficult time maintaining a losing weight for a long amount of time. It has to stop and think so to speak. You have over eaten for so long and your body has a great memory. All of a sudden you aren't introducing no where near the amount of calories you have in the past. Initially your body loses then your body enters starvation mode. It is a survival mechanism that kicks in and stores fat/water/etc..kind of like hibernating. After a while...could be days or weeks, the body adjusts and realizes there is no danger and you will lose again....until the next time your body thinks it's starving again.

It is incredibly hard on the mind...sigh

I understand why carbonated beverages are prohibited post-op, but why are they not allowed pre-op? Just curious if there was a specific medical reason, or whether the thought is to get you accustomed to life without soda before the surgery.

@ - You're preparing your body for surgery. You want to be in the healthiest state you can.

  • Sodas have no nutritional value.
  • Regular sodas are pure sugar, diet sodas are full of artificial sweeteners that create can contribute to the need for sweets like drugs to an addict.
  • Most people who drink sodas are addicted to them. They reach for a sodas before Water or anything else nutritional. You need to break that habit. It's best to do it pre-op.
  • Sodas are also full of sodium and can contribute to hypertension.

Plateaus/stalls are never fun. A very common stall is about three weeks post-op that so many people talk about. My post-op stall was almost a MONTH and I was definitely getting in over 64 oz of liquids, 60 grams, of Protein, and about 800 calories per day. Finally kicked back in. I just got out of my second stall a few weeks back.

I just keep looking at my overall weight loss trajectory and if it's still headed down, then I'm cool with a stall. It happens. I've heard it stated several times that a stall over a month can indicate something else is going on, but that's just a ballpark timeframe, of course. We're all different.

Glad to hear your weight loss started again. Don't get discouraged and it will continue despite the inevitable stalls!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
