HELP HELP PLEASE

Recommended Posts

My daughter had surgery in Mexico 11/13/14, she has had major complications since then. She went yesterday and saw one of the head surgeons of bariatric surgery here in Colorado yesterday and was told her stomach is to small. The surgeon in mexico used a size 32 bogie the surgeon states they use a size 36-40 in the states. After everything she eats or drinks she gags and needs to throw up. A few weeks back she went to the emergency room and was hydrated after her release we saw another doc and like the head surgeon he recommended we convert to a gastric bypass because the stomach was to small. She does not look healthy and is always dehydrated. Have any of you went through this ? I must note a week or to after her release from the hospital she did much better and moved into soft foods. Now back to this.... Any ideas? I don't want her to have to have surgery again we are all so worried.

We aren't doctors. Your daughter has some serious complications. You need to find a surgeon that you trust and follow his recommendations.

I hope your daughter gets better and this problem gets solved. I can't help but wonder how a gastric bypass would increase her stomach capacity. If her stomach is a thin banana, how would cinching the top part into a small pouch remediate the capacity problem?

There was another poster that had this same problem a few months ago. She went in for another surgery, but I don't remember the specifics.

???? So sorry to hear of complications. Hope all works out. Blerdgirl is right...def find a surgeon you are comfortable with as this sounds very serious and definitely needs expert medical attention.

I asked my surgeon (here in Colorado, too!) about bougie size and he said he uses 34 which gives good restriction, but limits nausea. He said anything smaller than a 34 can cause lots of nausea/vomiting. I'm sorry you're daughter is dealing with this. Good luck--I love my surgeon (Dr. Matthew Metz) and hopefully the one you're working with can help you as well.

I think it has to do with the rerouting of things that occurs when one has a bypass. that allows someone to function with a smaller stomach size. That's just my guess. it does sound like it is the only option to stop the vomiting and nausea.

My doctor uses a 32 boogie and I'm fine. No complications. I'm almost 3 months post op. Prayers for your daughter! Who was her surgeon? Do you have any updates?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
