Discouraged Already

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved December 8th. Tomorrow, Monday will be exactly two weeks. I have only lost 14 pounds. Everyone that I read about on here has lost much more and I don't understand what I am doing wrong. I really don't eat at all. I drink but not the recommended amount. At least 30oz of Water. It is so hard to drink 64 Oz of water. My weight at the time of surgery was 273. I am 259 now. I thank God for the loss of the 14 pounds but shouldn't I have lost more by now? Btw. I ended up in E.R. two days ago because I hadn't had a bowel movement since a week before surgery. That has been taken care of so I don't know what the problem is. I have even been walking. Please help!

Oh, jeez. Not another one.

WHERE in the world do newly sleeved people get the idea that they are "supposed" to lose more than 14 pounds the first two weeks after WLS surgery?

Seriously, I challenge you to point me to a majority of WLS patients who post here who have lost more than that. Or if you can't do that, how did you get that impression?

Your rate of weight loss is amazing. Find something else to worry about -- like hitting your daily Water and Protein targets and how much farther you're going to walk today.

I know that sounds harsh, and I'm sorry. But lately I've read too many "I'm depressed -- everyone's losing faster than me" posts that are based on off-the-wall magical thinking.

@@lljenkins

When was the last time you lost 14lbs in 2 weeks?

You're doing just fine! Like Ann said, worry about what you need to be doing (IE Water, protein) and stay off the damn scale if it's going to throw you into a tizzy about how much less you're losing than everyone else. Only weigh once a week or even once every 2 weeks if need be. You have more important things to worry about right now, like healing and getting your hydration. Keep doing what you're doing and the weight will come off at your body's own pace. Not someone else's pace....

wow. You are doing amazing! A pound a day lost...GONE! A POUND A DAY!! Say it out loud. A POUND A DAY!!! Why are you discouraged? Just think... if you could do that every day you'd disappear before the year was over. (Sorry, I had to have a little fun with it). Don't be discouraged, you are doing great.

I see you've only had six posts, so I'd suggest you do a search, and you'll see the responses others receive for this type of comment/question. I think it's easy to get so focused on our weight, and expect to lose several pounds a day, that we lose sight of reality. It happens to the best of us. :)

Think about the loss of those 14 pounds as just the beginning. That is 14 pounds that are gone, and never coming back. You'll soon see that this is wonderful. Keep up the good work.

Maybe focus on good things like a new wardrobe? I had my surgery Dec 3 2014, and even though it was recent, I am planning what I will be wearing in spring, summer...even though that sounds trite, it is a positive focus, and gets my mind off the pounds. I also am (for the FIRST TIME IN YEARS-I needed to emphasize that) actually LIKING what I see in the mirror! I can SEE the results, whereas when I would lose weight in the past, it was so slow I couldn't actually see the results. This is happening so fast I CAN see it! Find joy in your success, no matter how slow it may seem, it is not, as the previous writers have stated. God Bless and Merry Christmas!

@@lljenkins Lol!! Sorry I had to laugh because I KNEW the responses you were going to get to this!!! I see that your new and just joined here so you probably aren't aware of the amount of post that are pertaining to this same subject..losing a dang good amount and never thinking it's enough, comparing your self to others ect....Since you are new I can see how you would come to some of the conclusions you have. For some reason we look at pre and post pictures, read all the success stories and get the illusion that as soon as we have surgery we will turn into that person with those results. I think sometimes we forget to take note of the time frame that a lot of this happens in and a lot of post stories don't add in all the extremely hard work they put in on a daily basis to get to where they are it doesn't just happen Because they had surgery. Point being....get your inspiration from the success stories, pictures, weights ect... But focus your attention On lljenkins! Be proud of yourself for your choices and work hard to make YOUR OWN success story! Don't add stress where stress is not needed! Good luck loVe!

A big old pound a day! So sorry that you are not losing 3 or 4 pounds a day. No, you don't want or need my sarcasm. But the reality is you need to live in your reality or you will not enjoy this journey, process, whatever you call in. My reality, about 10pounds a month since surgery. My reality, zero pounds lost for the month of October. My reality, I'm so happy for every freaking pound of fat gone from my body. My reality, to get to goal if it takes a full year or more. Stop comparing yourself to others and fully focus on you! Best.

Jeez Ann! The last time I checked this was a support site. If you have to be more negative please do not comment on anything I write. You don't know me nor what I have been thru. Everyone has a story and just because you don't agree does not give you a right to have the attitude you have. Again, this is a support site and if you can't do just that please get off the site. This also goes to the rest of you who wanted to be sarcastic and rude. For the ones who actually had encouraging remarks- thank you very much. It's what I needed and what most people come to a support site for.

Ijenkins, I sorry to see this also. I had RNY and we try to only give support and external strength to each other.

You need to shift your priorities if you want to remain happy and healthy through this journey. You need to concentrate on getting in all your fluids. You need to get in at least 60g Protein. You need to figure out what to eat or what supplements to take for healthy BM's. You do NOT need to worry about how much you weigh right now. Stay off the f**king scale for at least another month or you will really freak out when you completely stop losing in about 1-2 weeks when you hit your first (of many) stalls.

Like others pointed out, you've lost a pound a day! What are you complaining about? I was utterly thrilled with my 17 pound loss at 7 weeks out. Work on the important things (Water, Protein, Vitamins, BM's) and the weight loss will take care of itself.

@@lljenkins - Please take it with a grain of salt. No one is trying to be mean. Just relax. You are doing fine. Your weight loss is fine. It's a a tool, not a miracle and 14lbs in 2 weeks is perfectly fine and within normal range. Don't beat yourself up or get easily offended. Read a few threads and get a better feel for things. Most importantly do not compare your progress with anothers it will only lead to frustration.

Blerdgirl I totally understand but this is a forum to be able to voice concerns and receive support. It is not necessary for everyone to post to everything someone else writes especially if it's not Supportive or encouraging. If you are not on here for support either get off or just don't comment. I'm done!

Why would I agree that you're a failure because you've lost "only" 14 pounds in two weeks post-op when I don't think you're a failure?

However, no one can stop you from being miserable. Only you can change your mind about that.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
