Eating pizza after VSG

Recommended Posts

Ok I need some advice. I'm supposed to go out for a birthday lunch at a pizza place today. No one knows I had surgery and I'm not quite 3 months out. How do I go about eating today? Do I have a 1/2 slice or toppings or what? HELP

I had surgery 7 weeks ago and I had pizza last weekend with no problems. It was thin crust and I ate about 3/4 of a piece with mushrooms, olives, and pepperoni. I haven't told anyone about my surgery either and no one noticed that I didn't drink the Water I asked for or how slowly I ate.

BTW....The taste was AMAZING. Good luck and have a great weekend-

Two words. chicken wings. Many pizza places have them as well. Or as SeahawksFan suggested, go thin crust and take it slow. I doubt anyone will notice! If they do, just say you are watching what you eat. It is that simple!

I used to be paranoid about going out to functions because I thought people would "notice" what I was (or wasn't) eating. Well guess what? NOBODY NOTICES OR EVEN CARES. Don't stress, just choose smarter, healthier choices and don't make it all about the food. Make it about the people you're with and having a good time :)

I eat pizza with very little issues. I can eat 1/2 a slice of plain cheese. I make sure I chew, chew, chew and I don't consume any liquids about an hour prior and post eating, otherwise stomaches ensue.

If any one asks, and you are not comfortable with divulging your health status, simply tell them you are making the hard effort of watching what and how much you eat.

You could just grab a fork and eat the cheese and toppings and leave all the bread! Just tell your buddies you're just trying to avoid pointless carbs! I did this often on my six month pre-op diet. No one really cared.

I agree with @@Babbs no one really cares what you eat. Think of this as your first test. You have to learn how to eat out in the real world. Read the menu and make a good food choice. Remember it's Protein first, then veg. I would either pick the toppings off the pizza or choose something else off the menu.

I am almost 3 months out and I've tried just the pizza toppings and it's awful painful. Anything too greasy causes me pain. I hope you were able to enjoy a little pizza.< /p>

So it was a successful outing! I dabbed all the oil off and tried a little at first to see how well my stomach would take it. Surprisingly I thought the pizza was pretty tasteless so I wasn't eager to eat it. I had about 1/2 a small slice and that was that. My stomach seems ok and I just told my friends I really wanted to stick to my diet. No problem! All that anxiety for nothing :)

Good for you! That's how you make the best of any social situation. If you don't make it a big deal, it won't be one. ;) :D

Physically no problem, but the calories are high. I have had pizza maybe three times in 6+ months since surgery and each time it wasn't very satisfying. You can have 600-900 calories in pizza and it is just a tease. #Not worth it.

Hate to say it, but if you have to go to a pizza place, get a salad.

I am extremely good about my caloric intake, fat, and carbs. I'm well aware of the high calories involved with pizza. I just wanted some advice in a new situation. And at this place there were no healthy options available, that's why I was so nervous. All in all it worked out ok.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
