Psych Eval this morning

Recommended Posts

Hi I'm new here and I'm preop for the gastric sleeve.

This morning I had my psych eval. The psychologist is going to recommend that I work more closely with a nutritionist, and she also thinks I may have PTSD from all of the bullying I received at school and home while I was growing up as an obese child.

I answered all of the questions in the tests honestly, but I answered the compliance questions as though we were talking about diets in my past. Right now I'm on my surgeon's eating plan to get used to the way I will eat after surgery and I'm not cheating.

Anyone else get a result where they will need to get reinforcement from the nutritionist?

I'm already under treatment for depression and anxiety, and I see a counselor every two weeks. We haven't focused on my weight, it's mostly for my relationship problems.

Has anyone else been scarred by being bullied as an obese child? How did you do in the psych eval?

I really hope everything goes well, I believe this surgery will give me the best shot at weight loss success!

Thanks!

I'm sure you did fine. Continue the counseling through the surgery and post op, it will help immensely. I'm sure lots of people were bullied and soon you will put all of that behind you. Good luck!

Being honest during the pysch evaluation is the best thing you can do. You will still get the surgery, but you will also get some additional counseling that will help you be successful with your weight loss it the long term. This is not a bad thing.

I chose to resume behavioral therapy post-surgery because I need to deal with stress/anxiety/self-esteem issues. I told the psychologist during my pysch eval and she thought that was a wonderful idea.

Embrace the therapy as a tool just like the sleeve. You are helping yourself to be successful and that's a wonderful thing.

Best of luck on your journey!

Thank you for your replies. I am so ready to have the surgery and get nervous about all of the tests. Since fighting obesity all my life, I am looking forward to having a tool that really works which will bring me success!

I've been lurking here for a few months so now I will be active with the group and just want you all to know that I appreciate and support you too!

Thanks!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
