Has anyone taken up Bycyling?

$300 seems pretty reasonable for a bike. I am saving up to get a new bike next summer. I want to makes sure I still enjoy riding before I drop a lot of money on a new one.

So here is the big news.....Guess who fixed her bike???? ME!!!!!! Well DH helped. We took the wheel from the other bike and put it on mine and tightened up the brakes and straightened everything out. I went to the store this morning and bought my helmet. And I did my 20 mile ride. Well actually I know for a fact at least 15 because that much of the trail was posted with the miles as for the rest I don't know for sure. It had to have been at least 5 miles though. I have to get a metropark map book and check to be sure. But it was a solid 2 hours of riding. My ass is on fire but I feel great. And you know what? Riding with a helmet was not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. In fact I did not even notice it was there. Does anyone else have problems with sore upper arms when they ride for a long time? I think I must be locking my elbows or something while I ride because it is killing my triceps to bend my arms at the elbow right now. They are slowly loosening up but does anyone know how to stop the elbow locking?

Hey kids

The GF and I did our 28 mile ride today. It was pretty awesome. It was "the covered bridge bicycle tour" in western MI. It's the most we've ever done. We were sitting with an old, had to be close to 70 year old, woman at the speghetti lunch afterward. She had ridden 50 miles and rides all the time. I was awe struck.

Yesterday we put 11 miles on the bikes, add 22 from Friday with the 28 today I RODE SIXTY MILES THIS WEEKEND!!!!!

There will come a time when I do that much in a day, but that's a ways away!

Numb hands...get gloves and shake your hands out regularly. Move them around on the bars too. It just might be a circulation problem.

Hurting upper arms...do you have a bend in your elbows when you are on your seat? You might need to scoot the seat foward some. You shouldn't be able to lock your elbows.

Helmets...I'm happy you got them. The other cyclists will respect you more too, like you are part of the serious cycling cloud. Good job.

I love this thread. You all are amazing. Thanks for all the encouragement.

Dang Juli your bike riding fricken rules. I can't wait to get up to what you are doing.

No I don't have a bend in my arms so I will have to try moving the seat.

I definitely have to agree with you on the helmet thing. Every single serious looking biker I rode by nodded to me or said hello. That has not happened before. It must be the helmet. DH was making fun of me yesterday about helmets because there was this helmet on clearance at Dick's and I would not buy it because it was blue and my bike is red. I have red and black gloves and I wanted my outfit to coordinate. He just rolled his eyes and told me I was a dork lol.

I happened to have a lightish blue helmet (with flowers no less, because my daughter wanted us to match...)but I bought a silver and light blue bike, so now I have light blue gloves...

I'm getting light blue jersies and really super dorky here...light blue sunglasses. My pink ones are too scratched now...Your husband is the dork. :)

Hey I figure I am starting to look so good now so more power to me for wanting to accessorize properly. I need to get some different sunglasses, mine were hurting to backs of my ears.

I'm dirty, sweaty, and exhausted.

Took my now one week old bike out and did 27 miles, 2 hrs, average speed of 13.1mph, average heart rate of just under 150 (love the bike computer!)

AND this is on top of doing my first hike yesterday - 5 miles round trip to the top of a mountain, 2040 ft elevation change in a steady climb of 2.5 miles.

I seriously kicked my own ass this weekend.

Going to go shower now otherwise my stench may come through the keyboard! :)

maybe get some bar ends - they attach on the ends of your handlebar - here's a link to a picture - [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Pyramid-Pro-Alloy-Mountain-Black/dp/B000ESNHR6/ref=sr_1_24/102-3129109-7481725?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1183933103&sr=1-24]Amazon.com: Pyramid Pro Alloy ATB Mountain Bike "Ski Bend" Bar Ends: Sports & Outdoors[/ame]

I have some sort of department store bought cheap kind of bike. Mongoose? I definitely need a "real" bike but I am going to wait on that. Money is a little tight around here so I want to make sure I still want to ride next summer before dropping the cash.

Hey gang.

So I saw my surgeon today. I was fretting about do I get a fill or not....I'm losing but I want to eat and am able to eat lots of food. It's mostly healthy and I'm not concerned about having bad nutrition, but I was concerned about the quantitiy...so I went in to talk with my doc.

He's so impressed with my exercise and weight loss! He asked if I would talk infront of their mass group initial meeting with people who are interested. He said he has other successful banded people but they are all about the, "fill level" not so much about exercise and eating healthy.

Of course I said, "YES!" I'm not shy. Where's the smiley face that's dancing on a bar? I'd insert it here.

And no, I didn't get a fill. He said not to eat to the point of pain, but I shouldn't damage myself with 2 cups of veggies and 5 oz of Protein, which is what I was concerned about. He doesn't want to reduce my calorie intake because that might impact my ability to exercise.

I thought I'd share here, my Marchies, whom I love don't quite get the freakish desire to exercise. But ya'll do. :)

So Yeah ME!

Well hello all my biker buddies.......Guess what I did today????????? Yes you guessed right I had the bike shop order my NEW TREK HYBRID BIKE.....GO ME, GO ME, GO ME!!!!

I raise Pomeranians, and I like to buy new additions, but decieded to pass this time, and do something for ME that will me it easier for me to enjoy my rides. I am giving my Schwinn that I just bought to my daughter to use.

I had myself fitted and tried one of the other ones he had there in a different color, but wanted a certain one so he ordered it for me. He will put it together, and than have me come in to get me fitted properly...

I am excited...He is even trying to get me to ride in the bike ride in the town Aug. 2....I told him I didnt know if I was ready, and he said I could stop when I needed to stop...so??? Who knows, I may....

Oh Hoosier I am so jealous of your new bike!

Juli you are such a rock star. You are like my bad ass biker bitch hero.

Deanna, Hawaii sounds awesome. Too bad I am waaay to poor for that. Maybe Oprah will have me on her show and sponsor my trip there lol. As for work, I work in a hospital. Specifically dealing with the OR supplies. Three of us ladies rotate jobs monthly. Two of the months involve ordering and inventory counts. The third involves actually stocking the supplies to the OR. For the ordering months I have to be at 5am. The stocking month I can come in as late as 8am which is why I could ride in last month and will be able to ride in again in September. I am going to try and ride right after work though at 1:30 it is the hottest part of the day. However, after getting in a weeks worth of Protein in eating bugs during my dusk ride I just finished I think I would rather deal with heat than with bugs. And for the record I just put in 11 miles =)

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
