Hungry a lot of the day

Recommended Posts

I am one week post op, on puréed food, and trying to eat high Protein low carb as much as possible. I am hungry about an hour or two after eating, physical, not emotional hunger. Is this normal? I thought a great deal of hunger went away, a little confused.

Are you taking an acid reducer? Sometimes acid can mimic hunger. Are you drinking enough Water? Once you move to solid, dense Protein you should stay full longer as long as you don't drink too soon after eating.

I felt the same that first and second week out. I read that a lot of people said it was mind hunger, but it sure felt real. My suggestion is to drink Water or Protein when you feel the hunger pains. By the time you get to puréed foods you will feel better. I'm there now and am struggling to eat enough. I'm full all the time.

I feel exactly the same way. I'm 2 1/2 weeks post-op, and I swear I feel like I could eat a whole cow. I'm fine all day, but by evening, nothing can satiate me. I'll eat 3 or 4 ounces of something and then be starving again an hour later. Water and tums don't make the hunger go away at all. I'll eat a whole 5.3 ounce container of Dannon Lite and Fit yogurt with ease then be hungry again in another hour. I've seen zero reduction in my hunger, and it pisses me off. Wondering if it will get better, but I have my doubts. I seriously feel like I haven't had surgery at all and the only reason I know I have is the healing incisions and I watched the video of my surgery. That thing was violent!

So sorry you're dealing with this issue, but so glad to see I'm not alone.

My experience is that it is definitely head hunger. When you get back to regular food you will quickly notice the food is not as good as you imagine. If you are like me you will have an aversion to food for a while once you are able to actually eat it. My tastes changed significantly. Steak was my favorite, now I could care less if I ever eat it again. Strangely my favorite meat is ham now. I also changed my preference from white meat chicken to dark meat chicken. Weird but I'm not complaining.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
