Can they cancel surgery after setting date?

Recommended Posts

I started this process in January of 2014 and completed my MSWL mid June with loosing my surgeons required 10 lbs. Between then and now crazy can't even begin to describe what has occurred, my middle daughter has had major health issues and was hospitalized for 5 days and has required tons of follow therapies. My youngest has Autism and we have had to battle with the schools, my hubby travels a ton, oh and we moved houses. I have put back on the 10 lbs and then some since then. I got the insurance approval yesterday and scheduled surgery for Dec 29. I have my pre-op day in Dec 9, and see surgeon on the 16th. I'm working on getting that weight off but if it isn't all back off can they cancel surgery?

I will say from my surgeon's standpoint - yes. He would for sure cancel surgery and has done so to people the DAY OF surgery. My pre-op nurse in the hosptial confirmed that. I thought he was just blowing smoke but she confirmed what he told me. She said that she has see and heard him cancel surgery on people in the pre-op room because they didn't follow the guidelines and lose the required weight for surgery. I was very nervous because I only took off 4 pounds pre-op but he went forward with the surgery.

Good luck! I hope it all works out for you!

Thanks. I'm actually doing the pre-op diet now to help take it off as quickly as I can. I did take the weight off but like I said we have literally had one major crisis to another since then.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
