Law school final 3 day pre-op... Possible?

Recommended Posts

I was offered nov 21st as a LB surgery date then not another for a couple weeks. Because I was excited and already had vacation for the week of the 24th, I jumped on it. I then remembered that I have a group final for a law class on the 24th. Saying "group" because not going or rescheduling is out of the question. For those banded... How feasible will it be for me to drive the 80 mile round trip drive to school and be able to sit there for an hour doing a mock hearing? Thoughts please as this truly is my only fear right now! Thanks :)

I'm interested to see what responses you get. I graduated law school a few months ago (woohoo!!) but am having the sleeve done next month, a week before I start bar prep. Obviously not the same situation but I'm still curious. Good luck on your finals!

Sounds too iffy to me. I would take the date a few weeks later because you cannot predict how you will feel after being cut open. Three days later an 80 mile car ride and a stressful mock trial? No way. You put this surgery a couple weeks later and you have no unnecessary stress. I cannot emphasize this enough: this is major surgery. It sounds minor. It is not. Good luck and take care of your body.

Thanks. I do understand - have had 3 c sections and an abdominoplasty so I already know the pain I'm getting myself in. I have just read so many people have been up and ok the day of or after. I think I'm just more worried that I'm going to be like farting etc while there. Lol. I have the next 10 days off after that so figure if I get through it, I can then sleep :)

I was up and around pretty fast when I had my lap band done. It might be difficult, and you may be very tired, but if it's something you need to do them I would just try to arrange someone to go with you or that you can call in an emergency top help you out. I drove 60 miles 2 days post op and dealt with my exes parents, so I know that level of stress is endured. You're biggest issue with the band is the lack of food intake, so low energy. You're not being cut into pieces with things being rearranged like with bypass, so physically the recovery is a little easier, I know my band was a LOT easier to recover from than my sleeve.

One more note and then I'll shut up, but you did ask so here goes. I was one of those people that had surgery on Thursday and went to work on Monday. I was absolutely fine. However, you cannot predict if you will have an easy breezy surgery. If part of your concern is to not let down the group, then I think you are willingly going into an uncertain situation where you may actually have to cancel on them. If that is truly a concern of yours, then choose the later surgery date. Good luck either way. And I truly hope for the best for you. As I said, mine was a breeze. Hoping yours is the same!

As a law school grad and a fellow bandster, I would recommend choosing an alternate surgery date. You will only go to law school once, you will be banded for the rest of your life.....I know, believe me, I know how bad you want to have the surgery ASAP, but concentrate on your finals, you just don't know how you are going to be feeling post-op.

Unless you are okay with just passing your Trial Techniques course, which I am sure that you could do, if, however, you want to get an A or a B, you may want to choose the other date. 2L I am guessing?

I don't know how intense law school is, but I DO know how intense court is. My husband adopted my son .. and the court date was a week after my surgery. I was able to walk, but thinking was a bit more difficult. It's a good thing that the judge didn't have anything major that I needed to do. She focused 100% on our son, and I was just window dressing. So .. yeah. I'd go with the later surgery date.

I only have 1 thing that hasn't been mentioned. If you are still on pain killers you shouldn't drive in fact it is against the law

I did real well until a couple weeks in and then my incision broke open and I had a gaping hole where my port sits.

Had to go to Hospital and have a couple stitches and medicine.

So take it easy. don't ran through life so fast, It will all get when it is suppose.

Good Luck let us know what you decide.

I had a LOT of pain near the port for about 8 days post op. Don't take the chance. Reschedule!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
