Bamboozled - Love some advice

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I'm just over 3 weeks post op and in the last 12 days, I've only lost 1kg. I was terribly discouraged about this and went to a bariatric dietician (I foolishly thought I could do this on my own - doh!) and I got some great guidance from her. She said to me after such a big weight loss pre & one week post op (12kgs), that it was only natural that my body has stalled. Yesterday, I had my post-op follow up with my doctor and I ran my concerns past him. He evaded my questions of "is it normal not to shift weight in 11 days" and "Am I doing something wrong" with a response of "it's hard to lose weight". No shit Sherlock!!!

Anyways, he contradicted everything the dietician told me, so I am completely and utterly bamboozled.

Currently, I am walking about 2-3km's every second day. I'm upping my Water intake as it's coming into summer where I am and hot as. I'm not consuming many sugary based products (ie Sustagens, Up & gos, juices, milk etc). To give you an idea, my Breakfast was/has been an egg of some sort or one of the high Protein systagens (given those up), maybe a cup of tea or coffee mid-morning, lunch is a mashed up blend of steamed vegies and tuna, afternoon tea is sipping away on my electrolyte drinks (sugar free) and then dinner is the same as lunch. If I get the sensation of hunger (could be gas too) later on, I'll crush up some ice and put a bit of cordial in it and work my way through that.

Since the dietician, I've started to have two cruskits crispbreads with a thin spread of hommus on one and a spread of feta on the other for morning tea or afternoon tea or lunch.

My calorie intake for the day is quite low, so I don't think I'm over consuming in that department.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong and why the weight isn't moving. I'm actually terrified now that it's not going to come off - that I've gone through all this and it won't work.

I'd love any guidance and advice from the guru's who've been there before me.

Thanks in advance.

Kindest regards

RozzieJ

I think it would be help you to keep a spreadsheet to keep track of Protein eaten and the number of ounces you drank. At the end of the day, it's easy to sum them up. The Protein should come out to at least 60 grams. The liquids should be at least 64 ounces. I was sleeved on Sept. 26th. To get 60 grams of protein in, I need to have at least one Protein shake (21 grams) blended in unsweetened soymilk (7 grams of protein). Do you use these?

For liquids, anything 5 calories per cup or less is OK to drink.

The instructions given by our nutritionist is to eat protein first, vegetables second and, IF you still want the carbs, have some. I would knock off extra carbs and alcoholic drinks.

It's normal to go through a stall. Eating enough protein and drinking sufficient liquids sometimes gets the weight loss going again.

Best wishes.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
