Recovery period: how much time are you taking off work?

Recommended Posts

Hi! I'm in the middle of my 6-month food log (the last of the requirements by my insurance) and Im curious as to how much time everyone is taking off work? I was told by my doctor I would be off for at least two weeks but some take up to 8 weeks off? Is this something one can apply for short term disability for?

I took 2 weeks off. I was sleeves last Tuesday and I could have gone back to work (desk job) yesterday with no problem.

I was sleeved November 3rd. When I initially talked to my Dr. about time off, my plan was to go back part time after two weeks and then full time at week 3 or 4. Today he said I need at least 3 full weeks off! I am doing great and feel like I would be OK with part time. :(

I would say it depends on your job. Friends of mine that have had it needed about 6-8 weeks to get back in the swing of things, but we all work at a hospital. (lots of walking and on your feet 12 hours...) Another lady I know was back to work after 2 weeks with a desk job. They say there is extreme exhaustion following surgery from adjusting to lack of food and Water. Short term disability will cover your time off with a Dr's signature.

HI, I had the sleeve on 20jan2014, I originally was scheduled to take off 2 weeks, but I ended up taking 5 weeks all together. I work as a nursing assistant and could only come back to work full duty. I was pretty sore for a couple weeks and I would not have been able to do my job after only two weeks. I was 45 1/2 years old when I had my surgery, so I'm sure that was part of what took me longer to heal. I would request more time off than you need, just in case. Good Luck, I am so glad I had the surgery and feel so much better. Chris

My surgery is on the 3rd of December and I took from the 3rd to the 17th....but I have a very flexible boss and I'm hoping to go back part time/half days around the 11th and stretch my leave a bit further...time will tell...

I've been at the same job for 25 years and have about 700 hour of paid medical ( never been out more than 3 days). My boss told me to take as much time as I wanted and my doctor said 6-8 weeks soooo????

I'm having surgery the Monday before Thanksgiving and go back the 17th of January. Friends who have had WLS told me they were good to go back after 3-4 weeks but plan for lack of stamina for another 2 weeks.

Good luck and here we go ????

Oh btw a also due 12 hour hospital work.

I am a manager for corporate cell phone company. I spend about 80% of my day on my feet, running around a store. I originally only took a week off. I was sleeved Tuesday. By Saturday, I realized I was going to need a little more time. I'm returning to work tomorrow but a little nervous about it. We'll see how it goes!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
