Has anyone not told anyone about having surgery?

Recommended Posts

I know everyone has different situations and you can't dump all the naysayers. It was just a response to all the comment in this thread I have read. Just my feelings.....

Thank you for this post! So many of these posts resonate with me, and I feel even more justified in my decision not to share this with anyone. I am not planning on telling a soul (other than my wife). I don't want to be defined by this decision and this moment in my life. I don't want to be anyone's reference point when they think of weight loss surgery. The only thing people in my life need to know is that I'm getting healthy. I want them to focus on that rather than how I got there. I want people to see ME once I lose the weight, not just see the "result" of weight loss surgery.

Exactly! Well said.

I told only a few people. Not my mother. I had told a friend and got sooooooo much push back, I did not expect. I stopped telling people.

The bitch of it is nobody notices the first 75 pounds any way. No need to say anything until then any way.

Told absolutely no-one, I had a hernia and gallbladder and bile exploration as well (day one, im writting from my hospital bed), because you have to change eating with that too that won't look odd

Feel like this is on me, my decision,my failure to loose and my success to win, not anyone elses, I had a baby 7 months ago so ppl are expecting some weight loss as well

Good luck, you will be fine and dont feel like you are living a lie or anything. Your decisions are for your reasons, honor that

The following is a email I sent my 34 employees yesterday, my surgery is this Friday. the response below that is from one of our patients and a good friend who is head of a department at a nearby university. I just want to show other options.....

About 20 months ago I wasn’t feeling very well. I had an upcoming physical and after blood work Dr. Foreman informed us I had crossed the line into the early stages of type 2 diabetes. He prescribed metformin , diet and exercise. I took that to heart and at a checkup 4 months later was told I was doing great and to keep it up. Unfortunately I didn't. .This past June my A1C had gone up some and he surprised me by suggesting weight loss surgery. He explained that weight loss surgery patients with co morbidities were having surgeries with lower BMIs and resolving many of their co morbidities. Flo & I spent the summer researching and meeting with an excellent surgeon. After having a lot of test BC/BS cleared me for the surgery and I am scheduled for surgery this Friday am.

My primary objective post-surgery is the complete resolution of my diabetes. Through our research and discussions with Dr Paul Enoch, we have decided upon a gastric sleeve surgery with a new component that’s fairly new. In fact, I am included in a study that only seven surgeons nationally have been asked to participate. The procedure itself has been performed in Spain for three years, and in the States for one. Below I will include some information about the procedure that you may find interesting.

I have always been an open person. You can ask me anything and not offend me. So I am approaching weight loss surgery ( WLS ) the same.

We have told everyone in our lives about it and I hope that this may have some positive impact somewhere. The surgery will be a huge change, but it’s not a magic bullet. I will have major diet and lifestyle changes but most importantly I hope to be diabetes free very quickly.

Surgery is Friday am at Rex, I should be in just overnight and home a few days!

One response from a friend....

The message from Steve sets a new standard for how to disclose honest and accurate information to one's family and colleagues and to invite further discussion as a means of self education. It is so well done!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
