Two kinda stupid questions

Recommended Posts

I just had my surgery done and I'm definitely a control freak and overpacked. I wore stretchy legging and a loose tee with a big comfy cardigan to the hospital and planned on wearing the same home. I also brought slippers because I hate the hospital socks and being in bed with socks on. They gown you almost immediately, but don't always provide a second one to cover up your backside so I brought a big sweater cardigan with me.

For entertainment (not that I was awake much during my 2 night stay) I brought my laptop, two books, and a kindle. I only needed my laptop and my one book. And I used my phone to play music to help drone out noise while I was sleeping.

Other fun things to bring - sleep mask (unless you can sleep with the lights on), earplugs or headphones, face wipes (you're not going to want to bring cleanser so wipes are super easy) and any other must have toiletries.

Good luck!

I also got tips from some surgery Patients on what to pack a couple I never would have thought about like biotene mouth spray, dry mouth lozenges, a heating pad, exstention cord(small) for my iPad, phone, heating pad ect...chap stick, gas x thin strips. Eye mask and ear plugs...cleansing clothes. I am packed and ready to go! You may not need all that it's just the things I was recommended.

Perfect tips! Especially the biotene. You can't drink anything after surgery and until the next day when they do the leak test. So your mouth is horribly dry. The biotene will help. I like the eye mask and ear plugs. They put me in a room next to the nurse's station so it was bright and noisy. The morphine was the only thing that kept me sleeping, LOL!

All the suggestions about comfy clothing, etc. are true. You'll really only be wearing the clothes in the car and you'll want to get into a huge nightgown when you get home and climb into bed.

Keep in mind that what you're putting into your body the first week or two is nothing but liquid so that's pretty much all that will come out. So you'll have liquidy bowel movements for a week or two. Don't flip out, just get extra soft toilet paper - you'll be happy you did. :)

Congratulations on your surgery! You're going to do great!

I hate going without a bra. Some people are cool with the girls hanging free. I am not so I brought a convertible bra so I could unhook the strap and get it on over my IV lines. I wore a pair of leggings and and oversized sweater home.

I was offered a binder. It was great. And ear plugs is a great idea. Outside my room another door opened and shut all night long. A popular room where they kept all the meds. You don't need much because it all goes by fast.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
