Newbie to exercise

Recommended Posts

It has been a few tears since I joined a gym or walked 5 km. starting out after surgery with hernia with swimming. Upped my steps to 10,000 as many days as I could. Went for small workout at gym. I cannot do everything I want right now but hoping for weekly progress

Just keep moving, you'll get to where you need to be. Remember, every step you take is movement! And any movement beats sitting on the couch!

Way to go! I was a sort of half-hearted exerciser pre-band. I did it because I had to do it for arthritis and the sake of being able to move at all. But I didn't like it and would take any opportunity to slither out of it. Well, as I got ready for surgery I decided to step up my routine. I was choosing myself and my health and knew that exercise had to be a part of that. So I started walking a lot more and pretending that I liked it. Lo and behold, one day a switch went off in my head and now I am one of those people who look forward to exercise. I can hardly believe this. Me? Well if it can happen to me, it can happen to any one. I faked it and it became real. I look for opportunities to exercise, arrange walks with other people and I even got a bike. Honestly, this is so different from who I used to be. Good luck -- you are on your way to a healthy new you!

Try to take classes if you can. I find that much more interesting than just walking or biking or even laps in the pool. I like the new friends I've made and the interactions with these folks. I know they look for me on Mondays and Wednesdays and that gives me alot of motivation to make sure I get there those days...and Saturday mornings as well if I can.

When I first went back to the gym, I walked on the treadmill so slow. 2.8 mph. For maybe 25 minutes. However long it took me to walk a mile. 5 and a half months post surgery, I walk at 3.5mph as my slow speed. I can do an hour.. I've just started jogging interspersed with my walking - it's a slow jog - 4.2mph, but just a few months ago walking for 30 minutes was exhausting. So don't fret, you will make the gains you want to make if you keep with it. You might feel like you are gonna die first off, but you won't. Just try to do a little bit more every day.

Just make and maintain the habit of exercise. I'm somewhat limited myself in what I can do, (hip displasia). 5 days per week, I'm up at 4:30 am before work to spend 45-60 minutes on my stationary bike and follow up with some floor work\strength training. It doesn't have to be super hard, (and won't be once you are fit). There are days I don't "feel" like it. I do it anyway. I may not train as hard as I would on a good day, but I do SOMETHING for 45 min. For me the habit is the most important thing. It got me to goal and has helped me maintain so far!

Rome wasn't built in a day. :) Be patient, but persevere, stay motivated and eat to support those efforts and you'll get to where you want to be.

You build upon your successes, however small thy may be....You do it once. The next day there is no excuse, you did it before so of course you can do it again, and again, and again....

As your goals increase, you keep telling your self you can do it again...you did it yesterday, why not today?

There are days when I set out for my run, I have no desire to do so and want to go home and back to bed....but I did it yesterday, so I can do it today....and probably tomorrow...

You build upon your success.....with each success comes a feeling of victory...a reward...then you want to do it again and again...then you are hooked!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
