So, as of today, I am 40 days post-op and allowed to start solid foods. The biggest thing I was looking forward to with this transition was being able to swap at least one of my two daily Protein shakes for a Protein Bar. Earlier in the week, I went to Vitamin Shoppe and stocked up on several different flavors of QuestBars to try once I was able.

Well, this morning I decided to swap my Breakfast shake for the chocolate Brownie flavor QuestBar. It's pretty soft and didn't have any chunks of anything in it, so it seemed like a good first option to try. Holy crap! It is SOOOOO much food! How am I supposed to eat this thing? It's going to take me all morning. The label says it's 2.12 oz. and I've been able to eat up to 4 oz. at a time recently, so I thought i could handle it. But it's so dense! I have to take TINY bites and chew them into nothing. It's been a half hour, I'm less than halfway through and I already feel like I'm going to explode.

Those of you that are further out from surgery, do you get to the point where you can eat one of these things in a reasonable amount of time? If I take all morning to eat this thing, how will I ever get my Water in? Am I going to run into this problem with all of the solid foods I try?

Hey, I thought for sure that you was sleeved in August with me. Anyway, don't force it. That solids are no joke and you don't want to be miserable. I am still depended on the Protein Shakes because I cannot eat enough of the foods and I am 6 weeks out. One scrambled egg is Breakfast and lunch for me. Maybe you can eat one through out the day and go from there. I plan to get some Protein Bars but I know full well that I will not be able to eat One Bar in a sitting. I think for me it will just be a sweet treat every now and then. Just take your time.

I finally finished the Protein bar. It took me an hour and 10 minutes and it's now been over an hour since I finished and I still feel about to burst.

@@motherof5 My surgery date was Sept. 1, so we are very close to one another. I haven't experienced much restriction with my soft foods. I can eat a whole scrambled egg with a 1/2 oz. of melted cheese and some taco sauce on it in about 20 minutes, no problem. I can eat half a small Wendy's chili in a sitting and just get a little bit of a full feeling, not sick at all. So I was pretty caught off guard by how slowly I had to eat that Protein Bar and how crazy filling it was.

Those Quest bars look really good, yummy....But my NUT said not to eat them...they have too many carbohydrates in them :( .. what is out there that doesn't have many carbs in it? I can only have about 40 grams a day..

Does your nutritionist not subscribe to the theory of "net carbs"? Sure there are 24 grams of carbs in One Bar, but 19 of those are Fiber. The daily recommended allowance of Fiber is 25 grams. So your nutritionist only wants you eating 15 grams of any other kind of carbs?

I can't even. I do have to remember to eat slow otherwise I will overeat. I remember those miserable days, SMH. Because I eat so little in one sitting, I eat more often now. It is a good thing that I still enjoy my Protein shakes.

I see at our friendly Kroger store that they hae Pure Protein bars on sale 10 for 10. i want to check out the ingredients and then go from there.

Looking at the Quest site and they have some yummy looking bars and now some chips, WHAT!

Thanks for sharing that. I don't know much about reading labels. Definitely will keep this in mind when I am looking at the labels in the future. There is a lot of fiber in those bars which leaves around 3g of carbs depending on which one you buy. I will get a few when I go shopping this week.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
