So my employer is giving me a hard time about taking two weeks off for surgery. They said I didn't give them 30 days notice of "elective" surgery. I've been with my employer 20 years. Go figure!!! I was thinking if my doctor will approve going back in just 1 week. I have a very stressful job but it is a desk job. If I do this, what should I expect? How am I going to feel if no complications arise?

Does your employee handbook actually specify how much notice you must give for what type of medical treatment? File for FMLA and let them bite it!

File for FMLA and tell them them to kiss your ass. My elective surgery was covered by std and FMLA guidelines. I had no issues

Here's my experience - I telecommute full time from home at my desk job.

I had my surgery on a Thursday and was back at work 1/2 days the following Monday, working a full day on Tuesday. I felt OK, but did feel the need to rest/nap or get up and walk around to try to expel the gas that settled in my shoulder. I am not sure I would have been up to waking up, getting dressed and going to the office the week following surgery.

During the 2nd week, I was fine, I still got tired, but I made it thru the work days fine.

Hopefully your boss will come around and let you take some time off. You need to recover - this is major surgery and you need to take care of yourself.

Best of luck to you!

Taking time off work may be easier for some then others. Best of both worlds would be to take FMLA and do surgery during Christmas break. Most companies are slow during the weeks in Dec.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
