Hi everyone! I am new here. I have my first pre-op appointment with the surgeon tomorrow. I will hopefully be sleeved mid-late January. My question is this, does everyone get an endoscopy?

This is to make sure you are getting the right surgery. If you have swallowing issues then u can't get the sleeve and you will have to have the bypass. You loss stomach acid that's needed to break down food. If you already suffer from heart burn and/acid reflux the doctors get worried because with the sleeve you will possibly have more of these issues. Which causes more health problems in the long run.

Not sure but I think many do. I did. Easy and painless!

I'm pretty sure everyone does. The surgeon needs to make sure you have no issues in your upper GI tract and will check for any polyps or digestive issues. This is important so if there are any problems they can be addressed. I just had mine today and it was a piece of cake! It lasted about 15-20 minutes and I was knocked out the whole time. When I woke up my throat was a little scratchy and as the day went on my throat got sore but eating some sorbet helped a lot!

Ohh wow I was worried about the endoscopy. I'm having mine on the 15th. Newbie here and so glad I found a place where everyone is relating to me in some dorm form

I guess it depends on your health issues. I have 2 friends that had it done, no endoscopy. I completely forgot to ask them before I posted this. What about sleep studies, does everyone do those? I do not have sleep apnea.

I don't think everyone does. The one program I went to didn't, but then the one I ended up choosing did. It really wasn't a big deal at all. I was in and out in a couple of hours and honestly the worst part was getting the IV. My hubby and I even stopped for lunch on the way home. :-)

I don't think it has anything to do with your health issues because the surgeons around here do it with all their wls patients. I think it's more common for gastric bypass patients than sleeve patients but I was happy to do it to make sure I didn't have any existing gastric issues. It turned out that I have a mild case of gastritis and gastroparesis. I don't suffer any of the symptoms associated with these issues right now but had I not had the endo, I would not have known about them and be able to start taking precautions before they become worse.

I think the majority of people do. I also think that many people do the sleep study. I skipped it only because I had already had one a couple years ago. But otherwise my doc would have required it.

I was glad I had the endoscopy and the process itself was the easiest medical thing ever.

Real fast and easy. I was nervous for nothing. He did find some polyps but they weren't anything

No endoscopy for me because I do not have any reflux or indigestion. I do have to get a sleep stufy. I would probably rather have the endoscopy.

Endoscopy depends on your doctor/hospital program. I had one. It was easy peasy. They did what they call conscious sedation. You are actually awake the entire time but remember nothing. I remember being walked into the room, getting on the table and rolling over on my side. The doctor came in and chit chatted with me and then I remember waking up in the recovery room humming a song. LOL. They gave me a ginger ale and some animal crackers and sent me home.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
