Positive Outcome........So Far

Recommended Posts

I read so many posts and blogs about Weightloss surgery before I had my own(09/30/14). Reading these post scared the HELL out of me. First the dreaded pain, sagging skin, hair loss,&this or that made me run for the hills. I'm here to tell those who will come after me, after my surgery I asked my dr why didn't he do my surgery? He laughed and said you had the surgery. The next day I had a pain level of 6 and that was my worst. I walked the same day if my surgery. I was able to eat my broths on the third day and now it's my fourth day I ate almost a whole can of cream of chicken broth. I have no pain and although I haven't lost weight (I don't think) I am one to say that every experience is different but my experience has been painless and I'm ready to workout. Maybe ill be cleared by my surgeon by next Friday. God bless and overlook those who may dramatize their surgery stories and surgery outcomes. We all had great surgeons and depending on age, weight,& health overall is how your story will turnout.

To the OP:

Like you, I had a perfect surgery and an easy recovery. And I wondered why (and was thrilled that) I was luckier than some others.

However, I have come to believe and trust that the vast majority of those who complain bitterly online about the pain, discomfort and discouragement they feel immediately post-op are not dramatizing anything.

You know why I think that now? Because I've watched a lot of people who complained loudly for weeks post-op just suddenly one day go, "OMG! I'm not in pain anymore. I feel good. I can eat and swallow. What in the world just happened? I'm heading to the gym!"

If they're not dramatizing about suddenly turning a corner and feeling great, then chances are they weren't dramatizing about feeling like crap right after surgery.

And I haven't seen any patterns with regard to age / weight / general health and early response to surgery. (FTR, I'm 68.)

Just sayin'.

You may be right but for those who did their research on these types of forums and only 1% of the posts are positive it makes you wonder why so many are still torturing themselves and and why should I? Well this is why because some of us handle pain differently and I know you can't want to reverse you procedure. On Saturday and feel up to a marathon on Wednesday Pain doesn't work like that it subsides sometimes slowly sand sometimes quickly but if you were a 10 on Saturday you're probably a 6-7 on Wednesday. That's why I say some of the outcomes might be a little dramatized. For those who were sick I feel for you but this is my experience and I stand by it

I am happy for you that your surgery and recovery have been without drama. As one who complained bitterly immediately post-op, I can tell you that your theory regarding pain/discomfort levels, and the rate of recovery did not hold true for me. I was absolutely miserable (with nausea, not pain) one day and ready to dance the next. It was like the sun came out after a storm. From what my surgeon told me, I understand that my experience is quite common.

I don't want to minimize anyone's pain experience. I wrote this post to simply say that every one don't have a hellish experience after surgery and for those who are nervous with anticipation the more relaxed you are the better the outcome. I hope my story helps one or many feel relaxed and that's the place where I'm coming from. For those who suffered tremendously maybe this post isn't for you because I can only speak about my experience. This post really wasn't for a debate about pain levels it was simply a post for people like me who did read the blogs and cringe. I here saying I am one person who had to ask did I even have the surgery because my surgery was pleasant (dare I say it).

It's great that you let everyone know that the post-op experience is not horrible for everyone. In fact, I'll bet you are right and most people will say it wasn't that bad.

For the people who might have been turned off by the negative posts by people like me, I hope they stuck around long enough to read the "walking on sunshine" posts that I, and many others posted after a few weeks.

I did stick around and now I'm walking with you. I was scared because I had no bad experience. I was expecting it I called everyone I know who had the surgery and they just simply stated that I'm blessed and enjoy the ride. So I guess no I know that I was trying to be a beacon of hope and I got a reply stating that I eased someone's mind who will have their surgery Monday so I'm always going to view the positive and heighten it. God bless you all and may you have a painless and speedy recovery. :-)

I just had my sleeve on the 29th, this past Monday. For the most part it was great. I am very optimistic and usually side on the glass half full. One small complication in post-op was my asthma related difficulty breathing. It wasn't something I addressed initially with my surgeon and it wasn't something I had read about in the Forums or blogs. I guess you take what comes. It gave me trouble for about 2 days clearing my lungs and coughing, but I am on the other side of it now. My pain after surgery was very minimal felt like I had done 5,000 sit-ups. I stopped pain meds. the day after surgery. Even through a cough I managed. I think your state of mind has a lot to do with how well, or complicated you are able to manage. I am so excited from the time I made up my mind to have the surgery even until now I think I'm running on pure adrenalin.

Glad your surgery went well. I have had a double mastectomy along with an expander that was implanted immediately after my mastectomies to expand my chest muscles for re-

Construction. The pain I had from the sleeve was worse. I am not saying I would not do it again. Because it is a very useful tool. The journey is not an easy one for everyone and everyone should be prepared. Not scared just

Prepared. We are all different. I wish everyone could have the kind of recovery that you did. That would be great. But it is good for people researching to know it could go in different directions. That is the benefit of these forums. People have all sorts of questions and 9 times out of 10, there is someone else who has had the same experience. It's great!

I'm so sorry for your experience but I do not agree that some people may need to be scared "straight " in order to experience what surgery is like. I have not had your type of surgeries (mastectomy) but I clearly stated that recovery is based on age , health, and weight. I feel that there are people pissed that I enjoyed my experience. Wow what's the deal with that!!!!?! I'm not saying after surgery I did a 5 k but I am saying that I Enjoyed My Experience and I didn't have excessive Pain. Im not a victim not fat or skinny nor will I follow the woe is me trend sorry about Your experience but thank God for mine.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
