Just started my 6 month pre-op process and originally I went in wanting the sleeve. However, the surgeon told me there is a higher chance for reflux and the need for the bypass procedure anyways. I just want to do this once, lol.

Wondering what others have experienced??

I went to my first consultation and my dr told me due to my gastritis I need to go with the bypass cause I will end up doing a conversion later. I only want to go thru this once.

If you suffer from acid reflux then bypass is the best option.

I know this because when I originally was going to have surgery I wanted the sleeve and was preparing for the sleeve but when I met with my gastric doctor he told me to have the bypass because of GERDS. I listened and I've had great success and even though I got Reactive Hypoglycemia which only 2% of gastric bypass patients get it I would do it all over again in minute.

Reactive Hypoglycemia is different then regular Hypoglycemia and is really a very low risk of getting it.

Good luck in your decision and best to you on your journey to a healthier you.

P.S. I hope I haven't scared you with what I disclosed to you and if it worries you discuss it with your surgeon or nutritionist.

Chelly, how do you manage your reactive hypoglycemia?

I had sleeve even with reflux. Turns out it was a hiatal hernia that was causing the issues and it was repaired during surgery.

I chose bypass because it has a longer track record (40 years) and is considered the gold standard for bariatric surgery. There just wasn't enough history and data on the sleeve for me. Also, I was (am - only 11 days post surgery) pretty heavy and bypass was the better choice for that reason. I know it has worked well for others, but wasn't a good fit in my case.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
