Hello All,

My name is Laura and my surgery date is 10/20.....I'm very excited and of course a little nervous. So I'm interested in hearing about the pre surgery fast....what were some of the best drinks/protein shakes that you used? Did your doctor put you on a specific brand of liquids? I see my doctor on the 8th so I'll be asking him all this as well. Just wanted to here from fellow sleeves! Thanks for listening.

Very ready,

Laura

My doctor put me on Bariatric Advantage.meal replacement shakes. I ordered the vanilla. They were fine, but I was unable to stomach it after surgery. Just to sweet and thick. I now drink unflavored Protein Powder in fat free milk. I love it and don't even want any flavors added to it. Boy, how my taste buds have changed.

I'm on 3 shakes a day plus 1 lean & green meal for 2 weeks (or more since I don't have a date). My shakes have to be at least 25 grams of Protein and less than 5 grams sugar/250 calories. I like Premier Protein chocolate from SAMs Club.

Hi Laura, for myself, pre surgery I drank Atkins advantage pre-made shakes. After surgery I couldn't stomach them at all, now I use syntax nectar and love it. My favorite flavors are grape and lemonade. It's great Protein, not thick at all, and I drink it with Water. My doctor didn't want a specific brand, just nothing with a lot if sugar like slim fast.

I like Syntax nectar. Strawberry/Kiwi is good, Fuzzy Navel is really good. Both mix well, aren't chalky, and aren't "thick". I've also started using Unjury unflavored and either mix it with the Syntax Nectar or with yogurt. It has little taste and blends well.

I was on three shakes a day, one green salad with calorie-free dressing, and sugar-free Jello and popsicles. I was making my own shakes with 4 oz. of unsweetened almond milk, 4 oz. of Water, one scoop of Now Sports unflavored whey Protein powder, and various Torani sugar-free syrups for flavoring. I eventually ended up replacing some of my shakes with EAS AdvantEDGE ready-to-drink shakes for the sheer convenience of having a ready-to-drink option.

I have the same surgery day as you do. I'm picking up my Optifast powder tomorrow. It is a requirement for my doc to use this brand. They have vanilla, chocolate, strawberry , chicken Soup and tomatoe Soup. Here's hoping they taste good 'cause that's all I get to have starting Monday the 6th.

I'm on Premier Protien from costco (someone else said they got it from Sam's, and you can get it on Amazon). It tastes pretty good and is very filling. It's what everyone in my support group recommended. I'm pretty happy with it!

I wanted to be able to get all the Protein I need for the day (65 grams) in 2 eight ounce drinks. It also had to be watery or translucent. The only product I could find was Isopure Zero. It was so expensive, so I hope it tastes okay. If not, at least I only have to drink to small servings every day. I have surgery in two days. I might get the Syntrax Nectar in a few weeks because it sounds like it tastes good. However,it only has 14 grams of protein per serving. At least it only has 25 calories, so I guess it would be worth it.

You should read up and/or talk to your nutritionist about how much protein you can absorb at one time. If you are getting 65 grams of protein from two 8 oz. drinks, that means each drink has over 30 grams of protein, which is likely more protein than you can absorb in about an hour. Maybe cut the drinks with Water and spread them out more throughout the day? Also you said Syntrax Nectar only has 25 calories for 14 grams of protein? That's mathematically impossible. A gram of protein has 4 calories. So something that has 14 grams of protein would have to have a minimum of 56 calories...

I'm on my preop diet now. Surgery October 17. I have two Protein Shakes a day and for dinner, lean protein(chicken, fish, or turkey) and veggies or salad.< /p>

I have tried:

muscle milk -chocolate, very good as well as the strawberry and cream flavor ( They are my favorite)

Unjury -chicken Soup , it was good, but I had a bit of an aftertaste.

Vanilla was good, mixed it in my blender

Premier- vanilla,good

I bought some sugar-free Syrup to mix in my vanilla flavored Protein Drink but I haven't tried them yet.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
