Here's the skinny on the pre-op liquid diet (pun totally intended)

Recommended Posts

A lot of people are worried about the liquid diet pre-op (I know I was before I started it). I thought I'd give some info for the curious or worried.

I'm on day 3 of 12 of my liquid diet. It is not that bad. Really.

I mean, day 1 was extremely hard. I was super hungry and it was hard to watch my family eat all day (and I have a toddler who is constantly sticking grapes in my mouth, etc.). Day 2 was easier. Day 3 is going great.

I guess it depends on what your doctor says you can have, but I'm on Protein shakes (4/day), yogurt, sugar free pudding, sf Jello, and certain low-cal low-carb Soups. The Soup saves my sanity because it's not sweet.

So far I haven't had any headaches. I am allowed one cup of coffee per day, but I hear this is unusual.

I have lost 5 lbs already. In 2 days. That alone will help me stay on it.

So, not that bad. If you can, ask your family to help by not eating your very favorite foods for those 2 weeks. Otherwise, it's pretty smooth sailing. I'm eating less than 1200 calories a day (just under) and I don't feel all that hungry.

Good luck to those of you starting your liquid diets soon!

I started pre-op yesterday. Mine isn't liquid though, just the last two days are liquid. It's 1200 calories and 80 grams of Protein. So I am doing one 40 gram shake and doing food for the rest. I was hungry yesterday but it wasn't horrible. Lots of planning though. Which is probably good practice. I can't leave lunch at home and go through a drive through, that's for sure!

Mnmist I totally agree with you. The liquid diet is not that bad. I too have a toddler & all she does is eat. I cook for my family & I haven't been tempted to eat. I'm in day 7 & I feel great!!!! Planning is a must, I couldn't agree with you more dogloverlosingit. Best wishes to all & keep up the excellent work.

Well, the issue is that everyone's pre-op diet is different. You say you are feeling great and don't have headaches, but then you go on to say you are eating just under 1200 calories a day. My pre-op diet had me on only 450 calories a day, so my experience was VERY different from yours!

I'm glad things are going easily for you, though. I wouldn't wish my experience on my worst enemy!

I'm on day 2 of my 2 week liquid diet. Yesterday I drank 660 calories. Not sure why so many people have so many different diets.

Every surgeon has different requirements. Who knows how they decide upon one method or another, but I like to assume they know what they are doing. My surgeon only allowed me 3 Protein shakes per day (max of 150 calories each), one green salad with calorie-free dressing, and sugar-free Jello or popsicles. Since the salad and sugar-free stuff had next to no calories, that was only 450 calories a day for me.

Me either! I had to stay between 700-900 calories and no more than 50 carbs a day. I was allowed Protein shakes, sf Jello, sf popsicles, broth & crystal light. It was the hardest thing I've ever done!

I think about all the crazy tactics I've used to loose weight in the past!!! I've survived on the Joe Cross juicing fad for 60 days, no solid food whatsoever! To anyone juicing, I think its good for certain things (and still juice vegetables only on occasion) but sustained weight loss is not one of them. Lost 40 pounds and gained back 80. I'm thinking I'll be well-equipped to get through whatever pre-op diet they assign. And how many people have done nutri-, opti, -slim, -fast etc etc??? and gained it all back??? I actually obese people have a lot of willpower.

Wow! I had no idea there were so many super strict pre-op diets out there. Kudos to everyone who did less than 1000 calories a day. I am doing ok on my 1200 ish calorie per day diet, but it's still not easy. I can't imagine some of the others people mention. I guess it really does depend on your doctor.

Good luck to everyone!

How do you plan your liquid pre-op diet, what kind of things to you stock up on? I'm trying different Protein shakes but that's it. Anyone use anything different? Do you add Protein to the other stuff or just eat it as is? Can anyone recommend any brands? Anything I should completely stay away from?

I'm still several months out from my surgery but was going to practice the liquid diet to see if I can stick to it so when the time comes it won't be such a big deal.

My pre-op diet allowed 4 Bariatric Advantage Protein Shakes per day, plus any low calorie liquids, Jello, popsicles, etc. The best things I stocked up on were different flavors of "soup starters"...pho broth, tortilla Soup broth (Swanson), Chinese hot and sour broth (also Swanson). These were great because most of the allowed foods are sweet...artificially sweetened, even worse. The only problem is they are high in sodium, so you can't go too crazy with them. I also really craved chewing, so I did allow myself an occasional dill pickle or some celery. Personally, I would advocate this pre-op diet. It is fool proof, you don't need to count any calories, and convenient. It sounds pretty dismal, but it really isn't bad after day 3 or 4. I think it is also a good way to start to rewire your relationship with food. You definitely are forced to find other things to think about other than food!

I have been on 1300 calorie diet for a couple months now...I met with my nutritionist on Tuesday and she went over what I will have to do when I am given the go ahead on the 2 week liquid diet (only waiting for 30 days on the cpap machine before I can get scheduled for surgery). I am only going to be allowed 600-1000 calories per day...protein shakes, sf pudding and Jello, sf popsicles (can have fruit chucks in them prior to surgery but not after), certain Soups and broth is what will be on menu.

I am really worried about the liquid diet phase - praying for the will power to make it through it. I have four boys aged 2, 9, 12 and 14...growing boys they are, eating everything and anything in site.

I want to wish you all good luck and keep up the good work! :)

@BurningButter! I stocked up on Protein shakes (obvs), yogurt, sugar free Jello, sugar free Jello pudding and low-sodium Soups. But all diets are different so your doctor will tell you what's ok to have. I'm going out today to pick up some sugar free popsicles to mix it up a bit.

My favorite yogurt is Siggi's fat free. It tastes weird at first b/c it's really low sugar, but that keeps the carbs low and once you get used to it it's really good. I'll eat this post-op, too, if I still like it then.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
