Foods that you used to love, but don't sit well anymore

I'm now 7 weeks out and doing good (I think anyways). Down 55 lbs and feeling good for the most part. Still get dumping syndrome once in a while, but, not nearly as bad as early on. I'm eating mostly normal foods (still easing into tougher foods such as steak and everything like that.)

However, there just seem to be some specific foods that don't sit well post-op. For me, it's anything with vinegar or oils. I was never a HUGE oil guy (other than Greek and a few other oil-based dressings) but, I absolutely LOVED vinegar. Now it seems post-op, my stomach lets me know if I even get a little of it in there. Things like pickles are pretty much out of the question.

One other thing I've noticed a change in acceptance to is spices and seasonings. After college, my taste buds started changing and I kept liking hotter and hotter foods... But, now I'm having issues with a lot of the spices and hot sauces that I used to cook with regularly.

Is this somewhat normal? Are there foods that you have the same experiences with? I know this is a process and I've already been able to advance a lot from where I was. But, I just hope that this part of the adjustments get easier down the road as well. Thanks, and good luck!

I'm thinking from what I heard from the dietitian and the patient education class, that everyone has different food tolerances after surgery, and some stomachs are more sensitive than others in the first 2-4 months after surgery. I heard that backing off a little off the spices and acidic foods (as in pickles, vinegar) and trying them a tiny bit at a time helps. Also, you may want to ask your doctor about antacids. I haven't had my surgery yet, but just a couple lines of food for thought.

It took me a while to tolerate sugar and rice, but I can do both now without unpleasant side effects as long as I watch the quantity. I used to drink a lot of red wine, but since surgery, it tends to cause reflux a bit worse than before so IF I drink, I tend to go for white or a cocktail now. That's really about it.

Been 7 months out and still cannot handle buffalo sauce or anything that's been deep fried (namely boneless wings and tater tots). Probably a good thing at the end of the day, but I do still miss those things... it gets easier though.

I love sweets, but my sleeve hates them. We now have a tentative compromise where I can eat 1-3 bites of something sweet, enjoy it very much, and not get terribly sick. I was never really into fried things, but I've accidentally had a few things over the course of the last year and those also tend to create near instant sickness. Oily, fatty, sugary, and basically anything that is bad for me doesn't tend to go very well with my sleeve, which honestly is probably a really good thing. Outside of that, I tend to crave beef now, which I never cared much about before. I suppose I could be a little anemic, which would account for that. I also used to love fish, and now it makes me sick, although chicken was a favorite before surgery and is still well tolerated now.

I can have a few bites of anything without getting sick...the trick is sticking to a few bites.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
