Public Smoking Bans

Recommended Posts

I think a tax on say, foods with trans fats in them, would be quite reasonable looking at all the stuff on them that indicates how bad they are for people's health. So it would make sense that people who eat trans fats are going to develope more cardiac problems than people who don't. And that is certainly going it be expensive. Of course someone who buys more trans fats is going to pay more. Just like someone who buys more cigarets is going to pay more. But right now we don't have people pay taxes on the state of their lungs or things like that-- they get taxed on what they buy.

I also think pollution is bad. I recycle- we have our paper bin, our cans, our plastics, our cardboard, things like that. I try to be environmentally friendly-- I don't buy antibacterial soap or flush tampons or excess pills, for example.

As mystifying as those sorts of things can be, or even easy to ignore, I think that air quality can be one of those things thats impossible to ignore. When I was a kid my home town had this HUGE debate about leaf burning. It sort of reminds me of the smoking ban issue only I can understand both sides of the issue with the smoking ban in general. What I never understood back then was how so many people would get so passionate, angry even, about their right to burn leaves in their yeards. Nobody would have cared if the smoke stayed in the yards too, but of course it doesn't. So it would become hazy. And then there were people like me who didn't understand why leaf burning didn't become illegal years ago because it certainly seemed like we should be able to breath-- and unlike choosing to enter or not enter an establishment, this was smoke that was everywhere. There was no choice for those of us with asthma. This is different (though people who smoke in doorways of campus buildings and the like really do need to stop doing that. I don't care if they wan't to go light up in their apartments or whever. I'm not telling them not to smoke. I'm just saying, don't get smoke in the air I have to breath). There is common curtesy (which is one of the reasons I don't run after tanned people handing out samples of sunscreen even though I watched my father die of Melanoma and I think they would like to avoid it), but a lot of people aren't curteous. And people do have addictions and problems and other issues. So we legistlate things. I'm not sure that we should. But we do.

I think SUVs, Hummers, and the like should be illegal for they do far more to crap up the air we breathe and they burn up fossil fuels.

I have to agree with that. Who the hell needs a hummer, anyway? Go buy a freakin' minivan if you want something massive and ugly!

LOL!!!! I don't know how anyone can AFFORD to drive a hummer, unless you're filthy rich!!!! I know the gas mileage is like 12mpg or close to it and they're dreadfully uncomfortable!!!! I just don't get the hummer appeal, but someone must see it, cuz I see them all over the place.

:huggie:

I think people who want even more gov't involvement than we have now should be sent with Bush packing to a country where they will gladly run their lives for them.

Of course, we should also send those responsible for telling me not to use my hair dryer in the shower should be sent with those that believe "I NEED more gov't in my life to protect me from myself".

When I wrote about the tax on crap food I was making a point. I'm starting to reconsider. I'm with you Lauren, if we don't NEED it, it should be taxed. Fruits and veggies... no tax. Dead critter... small tax. Anything with white flour or sugar should be $1.00 per carb and $10.00 per trans fat gm.

More gov't! That's what we need. Those that don't do at least an hour of cardio a day.... put them in fat prison.

You might just be on to something here!

It's always easier to point to the addiction of another and cry, "More gov't!!!" It's not so sweet when it is your own addiction. Or as you say, THAT is different. :scales:

To be honest, I think a "sin tax" on foods that have no redeeming value to them wouldn't be a bad thing. Make the bad foods more expensive than the good foods, and maybe low income folks would be able to feed their kids something other than white bread, chicken nuggets, french fries, and Little Debbie. I know that I personally tend to think twice about getting something expensive, especially if I have a choice between something expensive and something cheaper. To me, it would just be enforcement of proper behavior.

LMAO...

All i know..is that when i moved to a state where its banned, i was finally able to quit, and my life got better.

Oh...and god bless those losenges (commit) LOVE Those and i accredit them COMPLETELY with being able to have finally quit. I found myself addicted to them after cigarettes, then little birthday cakes after those (every thursday...if i made it another thursday, id go get another. did that for a few months).

I hated the gum, welbutrin just put me to sleep.

I will always vote in favor of banning it in any way (cigarrettes and smoking). Im sorry if it offends, you guys know i love yer smokey stinkin bottoms.

You'll just have to extinguish your smokes at the border, and i'll even wash your clothes....

:scales:

we can still be friends.

I have yet to see actual scientific proof by a neutral party that second hand smoke is bad for anyone. In fact, the original smoking experiment with dogs who smoked solidly showed no bad effects on the dogs. As a chain smoker, it's clear that this experiment was flawed since smoking does affect smokers with COPD and lung cancer. However, I have not seen a convincing study that shows that second hand smoke creates more problems in the general population which suffers from exhaust from cars as well as other irritants. I do not recommend smoking, but as a smoker, I'm getting pretty tired of the Gestapo tactics to keep us away from others. One of my former students lives in Taiwan and he said that a Swede there pointed out that people in the U.S. can't smoke in bars. Taiwan is more liberal that we are. I'm sort of tired of a few people deciding what all the people will do. If you don't like to be around smokers, go someplace else. Don't try to force your opinions on others. That's not true democracy. That Hitler's Germany. Clearly, I'm an unrepentant smoker.

I'm trying to take your side seriously and respect the fact that you smoke. I use to smoke so I understand that hankering for a beer and a stogey. The core problem with allowing someone to smoke in an establishment is there is no choice for anyone who doesn't smoke. They can choose to stay away from the smokers but it still filtrates throughtout the room. You can't even sit in another section of a restaurant even on the other side of the building without smoke permeating the room. The ventilation ducts typically act as conductors for smoke. Fair to me is go outside and lightup. Plenty of people do this.

No clear evidence. Okay here is a story. My Aunt had heart surgery. My uncle George smoked unfiltered camels. They were married for 40 years. She never smoked a cigarette in her life. When she died from complications, the doctor said she had the lungs of a pack a day smoker they were so black.

A reasonable conclusion would be that unfiltered camels were inhaled by my aunt causing disease to develop in her lungs.

Laurend I have told people with B.O. they have a "funk thing going on". I didn't really expect a response. As for the girl who stunk like smoke, if it is a trigger for your asthma, I hope you sat as far away from her as you could. Otherwise, I really wouldn't say anything to a person who smells like smoke. They probably already know this because they just got done having a cigarette.

I tried to stay away from folks like that, but the smell fills the room. Smoke-smell doesn't bother me that much, as long as it is light. If someone has just finished a cigarette, I don't like how they smell, but I can tolerate it. I just can't tolerate the really heavy stale smoke smell that chain smokers have.

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
