My surgery is scheduled for Sept 9, 2014 and I've been on the liquid diet since Sept 2 luckily only a week. I've been looking forward to this surgery since I started the process back in December 2013 and I've been thinking about it since Jan of 2012. so this isn't a new thing I've done the 6 month nutritionist and I've gotten psychiatric approval. But now my surgery is only 3 days away I'm freaking out. I've convinced myself I will likely die in surgery and if I wake up I will have a leak or some other awful sleeve complications. I know I'm being irrational from lack of carbs but I really think I'm need words of encouragement and assurances that everything will be ok. P.S. if anyone can advice me on a better Protein Shake I'm tired of pure protein!

Newbie your going to be fine, your over thinking this and it is normal to have these feelings, congrats on your choice to be healthy as far as Protein shakes goes I only drink premier Protein Shakes they are the only ones that stay down and I have had no complications and I am almost 4 months post opt, dont buy to many because your taste buds will changed after surgery. You got this.

I was in your place 9 wks ago..I did all the prep over the yrs an this spring 2 of my specialists referred me to the surgeon. But with my hashis an several autoimmune diseases I had put on 55 pds in 4 months...ugh. .sure enuff I went thru all preop requirements. .my last 2 wks I was on Protein Shakes 1 balanced meal a day then 48 hrs of strictly Protein shakes..I have been thru several brands of protein by my wk 3bc I was gagging! Over th www thought of another protein shake..I seen some options on here an one I tried was the nectar brand..(I believe) it has different flavors u can get a variety pack an I ushered it to help get my 64 oz Water in an the flavors aware packed with protein. ..their w not thick. .just like drinking water but u get it all...oh..I also used the chike protein brand also...an of course I had the pure protein. .I turned tried the Atkins an it to me it was nasty..it upset my tummy needless to s aww y I threw them out! I remember myself being in a ball of nerves my few days before. .my anxiety got to me..I was over thinking everything too! I was more then ready or I wouldn't have gone thru all the preop requirements. I trusted my surgeon, my drs, I new the protocol an I knew the risk. It was like well I'm not going to have much of a life fat..so I'm doin this! My surgeon an specialist all said the benefits out way the risk...surgeon told me just get thru first month..u will do great . The head will play games...hang in there...call ur surgeon if u need to..I stayed 2 days I couldn't get much water down. So I stayed to get Iv fluids. ..by that second night I was ready to go home..just take one day at a time. Ur preop staff are experts also postop staff..they'll take excellent care...they fix you up in preop an when u get relaxed it'll b over an wake up...:) u got this! ! Hang in there..I gained 8 pds from surgery an fluids. .don't b alarmed! It will come off!! I did stall for several wks at 3 wks out..don't get discouraged. .ur body is trying adjust to major surgery. ..be easy on yourself. .come here...luv this site. .be sure to take it measurement. I was in your shoes like 10 days ago and I feel like nothing happened. Reality kicks in for me when it is time to eat. I can only take in 1/4 of cream of mushroom Soup now. You will be fine. I certainly had the same thoughts as you.

I was drinking EAS chocolate Protein before surgery. I had Atkins and Premier as well.

@blondebomb. What as encouraging post. I enjoyed reading. You lost 62 pounds since surgery? How in the world did you do that? And with a three week stall? Sad to say my weight in NOT falling off. I'm staying the course and following my plan to the letter, but it's pretty slow.

@Holly4fun. Hello. Why all the thoughts of dying during surgery and leaks and complications after? You are a bundle of nerves now, and that is perfectly normal, but when thoughts of death and complications come....get rid of them and quickly. Remenber....that which we forcus on....... So, did you pick a surgeon you trust? Have you had a chance to review his/her complication rate? Is there a support group with former sleeve patients where you can go and speak with post op patients? Finally, on the day of surgery ask for some per medications while wating to go in the er. I asked for a valium and was given on. I wish you peace and blessings.

How do you research a doctors complication rate?

@@Beni I would out right ask the surgeon. My surgeon and I talked about possible complications. I also asked at my center of excellence where I had my surgery completed. There were three surgeons. The one I picked was the youngest, but I felt the most comfortable with her. If you have your surgery at a center for excellence they will share the data with you. Some insurance companies require that you have the surgery at a such a facility or hospital. Maybe all do, I don't know.

Thank you guys so much! I'm doing a lot better this afternoon it kind of comes in waves. Sometimes I'm really excited then 10 mins later I'm freaking out. I m going to center of excellence and I know someone who had my surgeon and loved him. I asked him if I had any risk and he told me honestly no I don't see any complications with you. He's had one complication last year and it was a 600lb 65 yr. old with a lot of health issues and she had a leak. I feel like as surgeons go I have the best. My mom and dad have told me that I shouldn't worry about the surgery that its the surgeons job so I'm going to try that technique for awhile. He told me that when I come in on Tuesday they will start me on some anxiety meds almost immediately. Wish I could of had some starting Friday:) Thanks again!!

@@Beni, I agree with finediva. Simply ask, and if he or she isn't willing to be upfront, run like you're on fire. No surgeon is perfect, and even when they do everything right, complications can still happen. It's important that the surgeon is upfront and honest when directly asked questions about leaks, infection rates etc.

Sometimes it just drops off in big numbers at once. I've read over the months about instances like this and our instructer in preop classes touched on it. The several wks I was stalled..drove me nuts! During that time I went back to drinking 2 shakes a day an in my Water I added more Protein. .I made sure I got my protein min in.I had bought the syntrex nectar protein I think that's wat it's called an it's not thick just like drinking a lemonade or something but all of a sudden it started dropping again. I no the body has to adjust. I keep my carbs under 40 grms a day. It keeps me in ketosis that way I no I'm burning. An with all my diseases it's very hard for me to" exercise" , but I do a lot around the house. Wouldn't u no it this wk the feet aren't working well..need to get to podiatrist this wk...my thyroid must b where it's supposed to b also. I take thyroid daily. It will b rechecked also this wk...Hang in there..it wrks! ! It will shock you..! The inches have changed like within wks...the hubs can't keep his hands off me..but that's not knew..he always has done that..:) I have to tell him stop..haha...don't compare with others..it can give u doubts an bad negative feelings about yourself. We are all different. .just stick to ur protocol an just hang in there. Don't worry. Your doin great! To this day I can eat only 5 or 6 small bites an I push away. I don't push it..you'll do great! Be patient! :)

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
