Dr Mario Camelo Ramos

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm in the research phase of getting the gastric sleeve done in Mexico and I'm wondering if anyone has had their surgery with Dr. Mario Camelo Ramos at Florence Hospital? ?

I can't really find a lot of information on him specifically. The same popular names keep coming up when I search and I do know there are other surgeons that are just as qualified but they may not have the "celebrity" status like some of the other surgeons.

I'm just want to make sure I make the right decision so any insight or if you know where I could search that would be so helpful also :)

Hi,

Today is my fifth day since gs surgery in Mexico with Dr. Camelo. I flew in to San Diego last Thursday, had surgery on Friday and was back home in North Carolina late Monday night. And I've been doing great since.

I highly recommend him and his team. I really don't think I could have had a better experience. The hospital is very clean and well equipped, the staff is excellent and the hotel room I stayed in on the fifth floor of the hospital was nice.

The hospital is located about 4 blocks from the beach (we walked there on Sunday) and about a block from Walmart -- which is convenient.

I had the same concern you did about not being able to find much info about Dr Camelo; but I talked to Bianca, the liaison with Medical Tourism Corporation and she was very forthcoming with all my questions and I had a friend of mine who is a doctor check out Dr. Camelo's credentials. I'm very pleased with my decision.

If you have any specific questions, ask away. I wish I could have talked to someone prior to my surgery who had used him as their surgeon.

I'm so glad your surgery went well!! I'm so nervous and excited and nervous lol. I'm from Georgia but I live in Japan right now and the surgeons here cost about the same as the states :/

But I do feel comfortable with the hospital and I've read some good reviews on it. I'm just so glad to hear from a patient of Dr. Camelo.

How was you pain right after surgery? I read the first day is brutal but it gets better?

Oh, how about safety? I'll be traveling by myself and I'm not too worries about something happening but it is in the back of my mind because I don't plan on telling anyone until maybe after a year, yes even my mom and dad... I do feel a little bad about it but I don't think they would understand.

Sorry about the random questions but did you tell anyone you were having wls?

ありがとう :)

Thank you for putting up with my questions

Ok, let's see...how was my pain the first day? It definitely hurt, but wasn't unbearable -- the area around my drain hurt the most. My friend that was with me dragged me around the room a few times to help with the gas pain. The second day was much better. The gas pain was manageable and dissipated pretty quickly. The only problem I had was that my pulse-ox was low after the surgery and they had trouble getting it up. They had to put me on oxygen a couple of times. But I have asthma and I'm sure that's was a large part of the problem. Since then, I haven't really had any setbacks; I've been getting better every day since the surgery.

I don't think you need to worry very much about safety issues even if you're traveling alone. I flew into the San Diego airport and was picked up by Ricardo. He's very nice, we chatted about Mexico and he pointed out various points of interest. He took us to the hospital and helped me check in and took my bags up to the hotel room for me. Dr. Hector Reyes, who works with Dr. Camelo, came to see me in my hotel room not long after I arrived. He speaks nearly accent-less English. He told me what to expect and answered all my questions. He was always very accessible the entire time I was there.

Dr. Camelo and the anesthesiologist came in to talk with me before the surgery. Also before the surgery, they did blood tests and an x-ray and another doctor came by and asked a lot of questions. Veronica, who works with Medical Tourism Corporation came by after the surgery to check on me. She is very sweet and made sure we had everything we needed. The nurses were also very attentive.

As for keeping my surgery a secret, I don't think I could have pulled that off. I haven't told very many people, but my close friends know. Also, I travel a lot with my job, along with two guys I work with. They always want to hit the nearest steakhouse in whatever city we're in and I'm pretty sure they'd notice my sudden switch from steak to broth. :)

I'm sorry you don't feel like you can tell your parents. Do they see you often? Will they wonder why you're losing weight so quickly?

I hope this helped a little. If you think of anything else you want to know, please don't hesitate to ask or IM me. I'll be happy to help you any way I can.

あなたは非常に歓迎している!

頑張って!

I'm glad to hear everyday gets better. It sounds like you had a good experience there. I hope my surgery is also successful.

I video chat with them every once in a while. But I will be moving back to the US at the end of April and my parents haven't seen me since August so I figure starting from August until April I could just say I was working on my diet. So maybe it wouldn't seem so strange when they see a smaller me.

I do hate to do it like this but this surgery is something I really need and I feel I would be much happier after.

Sorry for going off topic. You have been super helpful. Thank you so much :)

Yeah I had my surgery on the 17th. I feel perfect. I may be an exception but having my blood taken for the tests was the worst part for me. I was never in any pain. No nausea, no problems drinking, nothing. But again everyone is different. But everyone there is so nice. They have 2 surgeons. Dr Ramos and the other doctor (I feel so bad I forgot his name). But the other doctor will have more contact with you.

I would definitely recommend this hospital to anyone. You will be well taken of there

I went through medical tourism corporation. When I filled out the questionnaire. A medical ordination by the name if bianica contacted me and told me I was assigned to this doctor. He operates out of Tijuana Mexico at the Florence Hospital. He is on the Internet but the few posting are of him speaking about his credentials. The testimonials that are listed are vague.

I stayed in the hospital a day before and when Ricardo, the driver, dropped me off there I checked into my room on the 4th or 5th floor and later that evening they went ahead and did my tests. So the next day I went right into surgery.

The surgery went fine and I woke up and started walking a little soon after the anesthesia wore off. I stayed in the hospital one more day I think, and then the hotel one more day and I could leave after that.

Oh really? My coordinator was Cyrel and she had me choose which location and surgeon I wanted. I went through medical tourism also. But the facility is very nice and clean. But I wasn't really worries about that

I also don't know why there aren't more testimonies for him. Everything went well. But there are the "celebrity" surgeons and then the surgeons that are just as qualified or better that don't get so much press

Ky89 thank you for responding. I was getting really nervous. I was contemplating canceling my surgery until I heard from you. Did you end up having Dr. Ramos as your surgeon? Are you back at home?

It doesn't say when your date for surgery was, so forgive my many questions. Are you swallowing ok? Did you have a drain? What are some suggestions would you give a nervous nelly like me. Did I mention I was a wuss?

Haha I was nervous too at first since I didn't see much on him. But I'm glad I went through with it. Don't worry about the questions. I'm here to help. Yeah swallowing is fine. Straight out of surgery I had no problems swallowing. Yes he does give his patients a drain. It wasn't really painful but I could tell it was there but I will warn you, when they take the drain out the last day it feels strange. Like something wiggling inside you. It may take your breath away but once it's all the way out you are instantly relieved.

Hmm I was expecting everything to be super painful, because I had a surgery last year and it was horrible, so I used that as a reference but this surgery was basically painless for me. Walking will definitely be good to help get gas out if you have any. I didn't. Maybe it's the way Dr. Ramos does things that made my surgery so pain free...

The nurses give you pain medicine like every hour or so, so you shouldn't be in much pain.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
