Day one of pureed opened the floodgates

Recommended Posts

So I just started puréed today and I still have had less than 600 cal all day but since I tolerated it so well I continued to have broth and small 2 oz Snacks of Tomato Soup through the night. Something about it made me feel like old habits (constant eating even though tiny portions) also I didn't feel that FULL feeling when having liquids. ( i did with the purées) is this normal? Is this ok? Will I still lose weight?

Tune in tomorrow

Or just tell me this is all part of it tonight

Thanks in advance.

Hi - I start purees on Wed and you just expressed my fear - opening the floodgates! I feel like a developed an eating disorder since surgery - now I am afraid to eat again :o. All kidding aside, I relate to your concern -- keep us posted.

I found it difficult to find that balance, but it happened. My dietician just told me, at the eight week mark, if you're not eating you should be drinking. So it is kind of constant at first.

It seems like everyone is different, so you'll have to find that right balance for you. I am 2 months out as of yesterday and I've only had that FULL feeling people talk about just one time. I was hoping I'd feel a lot of restriction with the surgery, but I just don't. Don't get me wrong, I'm not having that ravenous feeling of hunger like it I did before the surgery but I just don't feel that one-bite-too-far restriction I've read so much about.

Hopefully you will start feeling it no matter what you eat, puree or liquid! Just keep measuring and getting in what your program calls for. Good luck!

It is so great for everyone to post these feelings and fears. Those of us who are in the research stage or are just beginning this journey, are very appreciative of the insights you provide. Thanks!!!

I have to say, I've been through several surgeries (thus my weight gain) two parents with different cancers and I've never posted on a forum until now (looked but never participated) you guys are great thank you so much. It's good to hear that I will be constantly ingesting. Since I've done this once before (dumb weight loss show) I know logically that my calorie intake is minimal, it's just a weird feeling to NOT feel hungry and believe I'm actually losing. Woke up w minor tummy pains, so the constant stream of PAC maninzing stuff Into my mouth has subsided but we will see how the day progresses. Thank you!

OMG! I too feel I'm developing some type of eating disorder. I'm definitely not eating enough and having a very difficult time moving to the next phase. For me that would be soft foods, but I just want to stay on pureed and my Protein Shakes. My surgeon wants me to start giving them up, but I have no idea how to eat enough food to get 60 plus grams of Protein a day.

I'm three and a half months out and I'm here to say that I too felt no restriction on my liquid or purred stage. I was convinced my surgeon didn't take anything out at all. But the first time I took a bite of real food it all changed. I can eat one string cheese and be completely full. I can have half a Protein bar but never a full one. Half an egg, a piece of turkey bacon and two bites of whole wheat toast and that's it never any more. Trust me, when you start eating solid/soft foods again you will feel that restriction.

Also, regarding the eating in the middle of the night. I was told by my surgeon that we should never eat in the middle of the night while recovering from surgery and that if your feeling hunger pains (or what your brain thinks are hunger pains) that it can be muscle contractions from recovery or dehydration so try upping your fluids and I also found taking a tums before bed helped for some reason and not laying completely vertical helps as well.

Thanks! That's super helpful. I'm finding less restriction when drinking (diet snapple, thank gd!) than when I'm having my purees. In terms of late night...I WAS full then after midnight my tummy grumbled and complained a lot. Problem is, half the week I'm awake til 4am for work. Guess I'll just have to play it by ear!!

So I went to the grocery store this evening to buy stuff for my puree stage starting tomorrow. I was like a deer in the headlights. I haven't been in a grocery store since July 25!! Before the surgery I stocked up on liquids, Jello, Protein powder, Soup, etc.

I bought fat free Greek yogurt (unflavored, cause I am tired of sweet shakes), egg beaters (I'll have to cook and puree), hummus, small curd cottage cheese, light mayo, and canned chicken and turkey (which has to be pureed too). The single-serve hummus cups look so small, but I'll only be eating 1/4 of them for an entire meal! Tolerating Protein shakes and Water has been easy for me -- fingers crossed that the purees will go down well, but not so well that I don't want to stop :) I'm hoping that the floodgates will stay firmly CLOSED!

Finediva -- have you moved on to soft foods yet?

Oddly enough I bought the canned chicken and mixed it w mashed potatoes. GROSS. used to love mashed. And I love chicken. Couldn't tolerate turkey meatballs either. I could taste the gameyness of the meat. I did have veggie meatballs from trader joes. Threw em in the processor w Tomato sauce. Then melted Lo fat mozz over it. 160 cal 14 gms Protein. Was like a meatball sub w no bread!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
