Beware: Woman on Liquid Diet, Approach with Caution

Recommended Posts

Oh, my gosh. I just drank my first Opti-Fast shake and I'm still starving! I'm supposed to do this for 4 to 5 weeks? One of these tiny little drink shakes makes me feel about as full as...breathing.

Somebody, quick, give me a pep talk!

I am on day 5 of my liquid diet (pre-op). Day one was horrible. I thought "There's no way I can do this for two weeks." Day two was a little better, but then I got the dreaded headache (what causes this?) for the last two days. Today, I am surprisingly not hungry. I do think about food and wonder about weeks and weeks with nothing solid, but it is definitely getting easier.

I think this liquid diet is a good start to reprogramming my brain not to use food as a "go-to" in situations when I'm bored, stressed, etc. I will say I have no appetite for broth...it doesn't help anything. I eat some SF Jello just to break the monotony, but mostly just have the shakes and Water.

So, my two cents...hang in there. It gets better.

Breaking from caffeine and sugar can cause headaches. Its withdrawl! It goes away.

Sugar Bomb,

Try powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein powders. I've been drinking them for a couple of months now for Breakfast and lunch, Monday-Friday. Granted, I'm pre-surgery and this was my decision to do, it was not a recommendation by the surgeon I've seen to discuss having surgery. I have found these shakes filling and satisfying enough, and they've been very easy to do while at work. On the weekends I drink one shake a day and eat typical meals. I started using Unjury because I was having such a hard time getting enough Protein each day; these shakes make all the difference. Unjury guarantees their product so if you don't like it, you can send it back. Pay attention to the instructions, especially if you use the chicken Soup powder. Experiment with flavor combinations and try other's suggestions (on the website). I'm thankful that a co-worker told me about Unjury otherwise I'd never have tried it.

Good luck!!

Yep, the surgeon requires a minimum 4 weeks on the Opti-fast diet for all of his patients. Longer if they don't lose enough weight. It's supposed to de-fat the liver, giving him safer access to the guts he needs to reach. I have to go to three pre-surgery clinics as well. I already went to the first one. They drew blood and gave me a huge 3-ring binder full of practical pre- and post-op information. Spent nearly the whole day there. They also went over all the Vitamins and pills I'm supposed to be taking--I feel like a walking chemical. They let those of us at the clinic taste test all of of the Opti-fast shake flavors and candy bars. Then we picked out the ones we wanted for the week. We come back again next week for another clinic. And then there's another one after that. They're really thorough at this bariatric center, which is annoying, but I'm sure it's a good thing.

I'm slugging through my shakes okay. Oh, I forgot to mention that I'm supposed to eat one Protein bar in addition to the shakes. Everything tastes okay, but I'm sure I'll be sick of them real soon.

It's hard when I still have to cook for the kids. I was watching them eat their supper with envy. That leftover 5-layer dip in the fridge looked so good, but I practiced self-control.

Thanks for the advice everyone and the words of encouragement.

I have an awesome Optifast recipe! I only survived my Optifast diet because I was able to figure this out. I took 2 powder envelopes of chocolate Optifast (yes 2- I was on 8 per day and could only get them in that way - which was approved by the docs office) I added those to 8 oz Water, with 2 packets of sweetener (I used Truvia), peppermint extract and about 5 ice cubes (mine are crescent shape from an ice maker in case yours is different). I blended that together and it was actually GOOD!! I kinda wish I could have another here and there lol! Good luck with your optifast, it's well worth it - I'm a month out tomorrow and couldn't be happier with the decision I made to have surgery!!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
