Different Doctors, Different Rules...pre and post op...

Recommended Posts

Bypass post-op here, I hope you do not mind my input here. I love this sleeve forum, and I wanted to get the sleeve, but the last minute turned out I have GERD so I got the bypass. I miss this forum (I find the GB section a bit boring :D ) It's like coming home ;)

So anyways, my doc is nothing like others! 5 days hospital stay is standard with him.

First 3 days - nothing through mouth!

Day 4 - liquid

Day 5 - mushy food, but only s few bites

Day 5- Day 10 - soft food (skipped pureed altogether!)

Day 10 - regular, well chewed food.

He said I am allowed to eat whatever I want as long as I can tolerate it. I am very lucky, nothing is upsetting my tummy and I do not have dumping. So I progressed to solids real fast, that probably explains that I only lost about 50 pounds in 3 months, but I haven't had any stalls. It is slow but steady.

I has pureed food on day 2 the hospital and was supposed to be on pureed food for 2 months. At the 1 month appointment the NUT told me anything I could with a plastic fork was ok. I ate mostly ham which I ground up very fine by chewing. I never liked blended food.

When you eat, how much do you eat? Is it the 3-4ozes I keep hearing about or more!

I was instructed to be on purees as soon as I got home from the hospital (she said he could do liquids for one or two more days if needed, but I was eager to try food). And then I was only on them for a little over a week before I was progressed to soft solids. Purees are the worst. Anyhow, after that I was on soft solids for a good month then progressed back to normal diet mid last month.

What soft solids did you enjoy?

lunch meats like shaved ham, or turkey and cheese sticks were nice. I did a lot of lunch meats. Yogurt. I never used to like Greek Yogurt but I eat lots of it now. I'm not big on things like eggs or cottage cheese but I know lots of people who are good with them too. I never had issues with Pasta or rice but I try to limit both of them, even whole wheat or brown rice varietals. I'm kind of picky, LOL!

It amazes me how different doctors give different rules but everyone does fine on whichever diet their doctor puts them on. I just find it strange how some people are allowed to eat mushy food within 2 weeks and done are on liquids for an entire month.

Really, it's different every day and depends on the food. If it's dense only a few bites I can handle, if its soft I can eat more. Some days I'm super hungry and I eat all day, next day I have no desire to eat and I just drink. But honestly, I do not even think I had 2-3 oz of food at one sitting since the surgery, that is too much, mind that I am only 3 months out.

My post op was

1 day liquids

2 weeks full liquids

2 weeks pureed foods

2 weeks soft foods (added veggies well cooked)

now - am able to add textures but focus on Protein. OK to eat veggies and salad that isn't cooked to oblivion

am NOT allowed any grains, breads, crackers or sweets of any kind.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
