Experiences with Phentermine?

Recommended Posts

Not sure if anyone pays any attention to this forum but on the off chance someone does.. I was wondering if anyone has tried Phentermine as a weight loss tool and what their experiences with it were?

I have a friend that has said if she knew about Phentermine before she had her VSG should wouldn't have had the procedure and just took her time using that product to lsoe the weight. I've read of the possible side effects and they are pretty unnerving.. though no more unnerving than the unknown of having surgery.

I tried adipex p which is phentermine.

I hated it. It's basically speed.

I felt totally wired up.

No I was not that hungry with it but you can only use it a short time without effects to your kidneys.

I lost 12 pounds first time and as soon as I stopped I put them right back on and then some

My endocrinologist put me on phentermine to help me lose weight quickly since I was pre-diabetic. Phentermine is his third choice of weight loss drug but I happened to be allergic to his first two choices. I was on it for 12 weeks. It worked great and killed my appetite. the only side effects I had was extremely dry mouth which went away after the first month.

I took it several years ago and lost 40 lbs. in 2 months. When I quit taking it, I gained it all back plus an additional 45 lbs. Side effects weren't too bad, just a feeling of being on edge sometimes. Definitely gives you lots of energy, because it's an amphetimine (an "upper").

In the first place you should be talking to your doctor about this it's a serious matter and decision.

Every medication or supplement has the potential for side effects or interfering with something else you take not working.

Don't do anything on your own regarding this because it just might be very dangerous to your health.

Been there did that for a year, had great success until it stopped working...which it eventually will. When it does your clinic will start coming up with new "cocktails" to try to achieve similar results. My experience with those "cocktails"

Jittery

Nervousness

Irregular menstrual cycle

Cranky

Suicidal thoughts

Other self-destructive patterns including bulimia

My advice would be to avoid taking them. Phentermine was the mildest of what they gave me, but it still affected me in ways I didn't realize. I lost 60lbs, but when it stopped working I started gaining again. The "cocktails" helped me maintain the loss, but I simply got tired of taking so many pills everyday and wondered what the long term side effects would be, especially with the side effects I was already getting from them. Long story short, when I stopped pill popping I gained those 60 pounds back and they brought along 22 of their friends. Who wants to take pills for the rest of their lives? Not me! Heck, I take liquid Vitamins now because they are more like a treat for me with the band more than anything else. The only benefit I got out of the whole experience is that I wasn't required to do a supervised weight loss program before getting my band since I had gone through that ordeal. Good luck, but RUN!

I'd rather have the surgery than to waste time and money on those dangerous drugs. I hate I didn't get my band sooner, but I'm here now and it's the best thing I've ever done for myself. I love my new body and everything it has done for me.

I have also tried Phentermine. It works great for a while, then suddenly not so well. It will curb your appetite and make you clean the heck out of your house ;). I lost all my excess weight with it, though not in a healthy manner. When I stopped taking it, the appetite and the weight i'd lost returned with a vengence, AND brought 30 pounds extra along for the ride.

I used to take phentermine all the time when I was about 19-20. There's a place in my home town that will give you a months worth for $50 bucks, WAY easier than it should have been. I was on the strongest stuff they had and I was speeding my butt off. Honestly, it made me not want food at all so I wouldn't eat all day and I'd smoke like a pack of cigarettes (it gave me the incredible urge to constantly smoke..) then it would wear off at night and I'd feel so sick, and sometimes I would get REALLY hungry late at night so I'd pig out . I lost between 5 and 15 pounds every month I would do it, but when I'd stop it immediately came back plus some ( easily within a week or two). Its truly not worth the time in my opinion, it jut doesn't feel healthy and it made my heart race. I was being a dumb*** teenager at the time, so maybe if handled more responsibly it would go well lol. One good thing is that I would drink TONS of Water everyday. All in all, I wouldn't recommend it.

I've taken it two different times, the first time was great! I lost 68 pounds in three & a half months. But, like the others said it only works for a short time & you end up packing it all back on. Plus some! The second time I think I lost like forty pounds. My sister is currently taking it for the first time & she likes it bc she has so much energy.

I took it about 17 years ago. Worked amazingly. But then I got pregnant again and divorced and I gained back a huge amount. Finally had surgery this January. No more ups and downs for me.

My experience like those in the comments above are the same. I went to a weight loss Dr. and got the meds and shots every week for almost a year. I lost a lot of weight. Had to stop taking them and started gaining right away. Eventually got back on them and my blood pressure kept sky rocketing so I stopped. Plus it is really expensive. Anyway, gained all the weight back and some extra. I dont call that successful at all.

If you choose to do it, I hope you have better results but after reading the same experiences from everyone, I think that would be very difficult to achieve but we are all different.

I used it as a part of the "phen-fen" craze back in the mid-90s. I was trying to get my weight down to have a healthier pregnancy. I lost about 30 lbs in 5 months. The other Phen was pulled by the FDA - Fenfluromine. I tried the phentermine again (via mail order - probably a mistake) and I'm pretty sure the pills were phony because I had no success. I gained back the weight the first time with pregnancy.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
