How many grams of protein should we have daily?

Recommended Posts

What is the healthy minimum of Protein we should have daily? I know we should eat Protein first, but I just want to make sure I understand all this protein talk. Thank you.

It depends on what food stage you're in (ex: during my pre-op diet phase I was eating like 100 grams of Protein a day but the first few weeks post op you'll be struggling to get past 40) but in general, once you get past the first month of surgery, it should be about 60-80 grams of Protein per day. That's what my nutritionist says anyways :)

My surgery was the 26th..was impossible the first week to get Protein but once you can have shakes its pretty easy to get enough.

My surgeon told me to take my weight and divide it by 2.5. He said that gives you a suggested guideline. It does run high though if you are seriously obese like me.

Example: My current weight is 288. Dividing that by 2.5 gives me 115g Protein daily

Now, it can be really difficult to reach that goal but my surgeon said get as close to it as you can. Mostly, I push to get in 75-80 a day. That seems more realistic. During my immediate pre and post-op phase I pushed consumption all the way up to 115.

I like the first response on this post. It seemed helpful.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
