Hey,

Just wondering what effect the anesthesia had on people after the surgery?

I've never had it and just wondering about side effects, or anything else I should know!

Thanks :girl_hug:

Anaesthesia affects us all differently. Among the bad stories are people getting very nauseated upon waking, an effect that I understand can last a while. Others have absolutely no ill effects, reviving almost immediately.

I'm somewhere in the middle. While I don't get sick, I do feel a lingering fogginess for a day or so. When I had my original banding surgery it was a full three days before I felt 100% alert. But when I had my band removed, I was totally over it the next day. Maybe they used less that time, or something.

hi heather,

in my past surgeries...i never had any reaction to anesthesia except grogginess. for the lapband...i had pretty severe nausea for the first 12 hrs.

i was talking to a nurse where i live and she said the type of anesthesia they use here in texas may be a factor. i dont know if i believe that.....but they have medicine for nausea.

the key thing is to get up and walk, walk, walk after the operation and do the breathing exercises. they want to avoid blood clots and pneumonia which can occur after anesthesia (it's rare but i didnt want to take any chances)

hope this helps

I took phenergan when I got home from surgery center, and never had one minutes problem with nausea....they gave me phenergan when I got to the surgery center and I even had to drink an alka-seltzer, right before the surgery...Slept right thru the surgery and woke up really fast...no problem...there was a lot of gas in the chest area...that bothered me more than anything...took liquid gas-x and it went away...walking around is the best thing you can do......

I get weepy when I wake up from it...takes me a while to come out of it. I slept quite a bit in recovery when supposedly most wake right up after surgery. I know I was sleeping at least 2 hours after...then groggy most of that same day.

I had no problem what so ever, One of the Lucky ones I guess. They woke me up, within 1 hour I went to the bathroom by myself. Was a little unsure on my feet, but after a couple of hours went home. We live 1 hour from Hosp. No problems going home. Slept for a couple of hours that pm. cooked supper that night, walked all over the neighborhood the next day. Very slowly, but we walked.

I was banded on Oct.24, in Lufkin Tx. by Dr. Darry Meyer.

The weight comes off slowly, but I guess that's better for us in the long run.

I have lost more inches than anything. From a size 20 to a 13-14. Only about 52 lbs ALL together. I lost 15 on the liquid part.

I'm having problems feeling full. I'm just NOT getting there.

Has anyone else been told NOT to drink anything 1 hour before meals and 1 hour or so after meals?? I'm really having problems with that!!

hi

this is REALLY hard during meals.

my Dr says ok to drink before, no drinks during meals and wait 30 mins till "after" having anything to drink

when i go out to eat....i order ice tea right before my meal and throw it out. i keep forgetting i cant have it.

these new "practices" sound easy....but boy are they hard

I have been out a few times and never fails to get the weeps....for some silly reason....my nurse sis says its cause the drugs that they use during the procedure takes its sweet time coming out of your system....all the best to you....POPT weepy or not! lol

I tend to get a bit weepy a few days afterwards, and I've had a sort throat/chest from the tubes before too.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
