Does anyone's chest feel weird?

Recommended Posts

I have always been mega paranoid about heart problems, despite the fact that other than being obese, I have literally no other risk factors. (I even had an EKG done a few years ago just to be sure I could smoke weed safely.) I had an EKG done while on a bike for the weight loss program I had to complete pre-surgery as well (this was maybe 6 months ago), and both times everything was fine.

But the past few days my chest has been feeling... weird. It doesn't hurt, there's no major squeezing or anything. I just feel hyper aware of my heart, and I sometimes feel something I can sort of describe as a poking (?)... I really don't know; just a "sensation." I mentioned it to a doctor friend. She told me it was probably nothing. I see my surgeon on the 11th for my first post-op check up and I'll definitely mention it to him, but in the mean time I'm wrestling with whether or not I should see my PCP. I think I saw her with very similar "symptoms" when I had the weed related EKG, and I'm a known hypochondriac in her office. But then when I google "heart attack symptoms in women," everything always says, "If you suspect anything, call 911 IMMEDIATELY!!!" Ugh, I'm 99% sure I'm being totally ridiculous... but what if?

Another reason though why I'm pretty sure I'm freaking out over nothing, is that when I'm doing something or with people, I totally forget about it. I did all my normal stuff today and was totally fine. I only notice it when I'm by myself and get caught in a sort of solipsistic loop.

Anyway, did anyone else feel anything like this post-op? A sort of weird feeling in the middle of the chest? I'm 5 weeks out and have just started exercising again. Or did anyone who actually had a heart attack have something that sounds similar beforehand?

Ugh, even posting this is making nervous because I'm afraid of people freaking me out more! I'd be so embarrassed to go to them emergency room and just try to muddle through in my broken German that my heart/chest maybe feels kinda "weird?" I can't even describe it in English!

I have noticed a fluttering type feeling in my chest a few times since surgery. It alarmed me as well but I dismissed it as nothing only because I has a full cardio work up before surgery. It was followed by a feeling of being breathless unless that was me being scared.

I also get the fluttering feeling and it freaks me out for a brief second. I have no ideal what it is unless it's gas. Idk. If you find any answers, please share with us. Thank you :-)

7/14 I will be 8 months post-up. You're not alone, I also felt the heart flutters especially 1st couple of weeks after surgery upon waking up in the morning and many times my heart just racing until I would calm myself and tell myself it was nothing. It eventually subsided but still happens from time to time. It didn't hurt either.

What I have noticed is that if I haven't had a bm I get chest like pains, then I evaluate what I have eaten and his much fluids and Water did I intake and if I don't have urge to have a bm, I will drink milk of magnesium to help, and then the pain goes away and I feel better.

I didn't share with my doctor during post-up visits as I found my own resolutions.

I can totally relate on seeing pop for every symptom and possibly brung a hypochondriac as well, but in all honesty I'd rather be safe and healthy and listen to my body than to have something serious happen than could of been avoided. Always listen to your intuition when you're not feeling well and get seen by your doctor.

Best wishes and hope the fluttering subsided.

Forgot to mention I used to have hbp prior to surgery, took last hpb med day of surgery and no longer take any meds for hbp and type 2 diabetes.

I had chest pain so bad that I felt like I couldn't breathe.it panicked me and was rushed by ambulance to a local hospital. My heart was fine.and the pain.just went away on its own- Ihad special test done.and my surgeon said a little part of.the remaining stomach near the lower intestined had slightly curled up.so they went in to look at my.pouch with a camera and stuck a balloon in the pasage way to open it up a little.it seems to have worked. I haven't had the feeling again and its been over 1 month.so I would encourage you to mention it to your doctor..well wishes to you.

I have to say, I've actually been feeling a lot better since I've been working out this week. I'm still having weird fleeting pains in odd places, but since I can survive a workout, I'm not so worried about dropping dead all of a sudden. I'll mention it to my surgeon when I see him next week though, along with the weird headaches I've been having.

It's always better to be cautious and seek help if you are really concerned......that being said, if you can point to where it hurts on your chest with one finger, it's not your heart. True chest pain is very difficult to ignore. As we get older, everyone gets premature ventricle contractions (PVCs) and some people can actually feel them when they occur; that may explain your feeling. If you are dehydrated and change your position (sitting to standing etc), your heart rate will speed up to sort of catch up and compensate for a low blood pressure (due to dehydration). That can also cause a weird or funny feeling. Lastly, reflux will create a funny feeling that can be misconstrued as chest discomfort. Trust your instincts when you really feel like something is wrong.

@@BitterSweet* that's all excellent to know! I definitely can point to the paint with one finger (and on a scale of 1-10, the pain is only like a 1, it's just that when we think of our chests, it's easy to freak out!). Anyway, I've been fine the past few days, and I see my surgeon on Friday. I will indeed bring it up, but I don't think I need to see anyone asap.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
