How long is too long?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! So I'm pre-op and my surgery date is 08/19. I'm going through Dr Kim in texas getting the gastric sleeve.

Here is my issue. I was told to start my liquid diet on 06/11/14 and continue it until surgery. That seems to be a bit long to me and I've talked to other sleeve patients who said their liquid diet ranged between 2-4 weeks. I just don't know why mine is so long and wondering how long you guys had to do yours.

2 weeks is usually the norm...not 2 months...I'd call and ask...mine was COMPLETELY liquid for 2 weeks, no chewable food... they may want you on a restricted diet for 2 months...but liquid; I'd say there is a miscommunication there.

That certainly sounds way too long to me. I have never seen a protocol for longer than 2 weeks and I have done a lot of research. Double check. Two weeks is hard enough.

Um, I think that is crazy. Are you sure? I would clarify again this length of time. Good Luck!

Girl they told me 8 weeks no food. I was all excited about the surgery but when i thought about it i was like dang that's a long time. They actually gave me a list of the only things i could consume which consists of Protein Shakes, chicken broth, sugar free Jello, sugar free popsicles, green tea, fitness Water, zero calorie drinks, etc..... I think i am going to call them.

Don't confuse pre and post op. You might have mis heard post op as pre op.

My nut had me on shakes with one healthy frozen dinner and veggies for months before surgery... Does your doc require you to lose some weight before surgery? Also, going on liquid, or modified liquid like mine, helped me to adjust to the post-surgery requirements.

Good luck!

It is specifically written on the paper that this is my diet until surgery happens....not after

Wow, that is long. I'm Lapband and I had 5 days Clear Liquids pre surgery and 6 weeks full liquids post surgery.

It doesn't hurt to give the doctor a call and double check. If they gave you that protocol there is probably some reason for it and they should tell what that reason is. Even if it's just the way they do things in that office you want to know because that doesn't "have" to be the office you go to.

You can always check in with other doctors to see if they have a protocol that works better for you, that you can abide by and make it to surgery and beyond.

I wish you all the best of luck!

On a personal note...as a banded patient I had a 2 week prep, both my husband and I started 1 month out rather then 2 weeks so that if we had issues would be work them out in the first 2 weeks to be sure that our actually 2 weeks of liquids would be 100% and with no slips. Maybe that is what your doc is thinking too....you never know until you ask :)

Okay guys just called the doc and spoke with the nurse who told me it's mainly because i carry a lot of my weight in my stomach area and they want to reduce that as much as possible. She said since I've been doing so well with my weight loss on my own that she's gonna ask the doc if i can do one meal like a meat a broccoli until about 4 weeks out. Thanks for the advice!

Wow that is long. My doctor said 2 weeks. I bet everyone is different due to weight and other issues. I would talk to your doc and ask him why. Always stick to what your doc says's but no harm asking why others are two weeks and some are 4 weeks.

Wow. I had no pre op diet (just 24 hrs of liquids) but was on full liquids for 4 weeks. That was hard enuf and I didn't have 85% of my stomach, making a tiny bit easier. If u can stay on a liquid diet for 2 mths, my hands are off to u. How long is ur post op diet?

Never compare your surgeon's pan to someone else's. it does sound drastic, but may have a reason.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
