Cigna Insurance

Recommended Posts

Hi.... My surgery is scheduled on 7/24 and I'm waiting for approval from Cigna. I'm very nervous that I will not get the approval... How long did it take to get approval. I'm on my pre op diet right now and it would be sad to go through all this and not get to the grand finale.... Gastric sleeve

My initial decision was the band and I was approved for it within days. However, I switched to the VSG and that took a little longer....only because all the paperwork wasn't together. Plus my primary care doctor's assistant decided to play doctor and decide that my doctor would not provide the clearance letter needed for pre-approval. So it took about a month. I would encourage you to follow up did you get anything from CIGNA yet? Call CIGNA? Call the surgical coordinator etc. when was your paperwork submitted? I think once all the paperwork is in place approval doesn't take that long. Good luck!!!

The rule is Cigna has 5 business days

If it needs a medical director review it could be 10.

Never heard of it taking longer unless there was a specific reason (pending document).

Yes I do work there.

Thank you both very much for the reply. Hopefully I will hear something next week. I'll call office on Monday and ask them when did they send out the paperwork.

I know you are glad the process is over.... now waiting on our survey date... Congratulations!!!

My approval from Cigna was really quick. It was my doctor's office that gave the challenge. It took them submitting paperwork to Cigna 3x to get my approval.... their fax machine apparently was not submitting all of the needed pages. Two denial and ONE approval letter later, here I stand awaiting my date from the doctor's office. Hopefully I will have something tomorrow.

Yes, I am. I almost didn't know what to say when they finally said APPROVED!

Yep, I did. Same thing with the 4 visits so it would be 89+ days. Is this your last step before going to insurance? Make sure you get a letter of recommendation from your PCP. I didn't have that and that slowed me up a few days.

I am amazed that so many people are able to get a surgery date before they have insurance approval. For those that are self pay I understand but my Doctor won't even discuss surgery dates until there is a written confirmation from the Insurance Company.

For me the whole approval process was a complete nightmare. It took a total of 75 days before I finally got approval.

In the first go around I had to wait until the afternoon of the 30th day before Cigna would even tell me that I was denied. I had called Cigna weekly to see if they had everything they needed to make a determination and they told me that they did. When I was told that my surgery was denied they said it was because my application did not contain my Physicians letter reccommending surgery and clearing me for surgery. I went to great lenghts to get the letter so I know it was sent. I was also told that my file did not contain clearance from a mental health professional and yet that was in my file as well.

I protested and we resubmitted everything and did get approval 15 days later. Only problem was by that time I had my endoscopy which showed that I had 10 polyps in the stomach. I had originally applied for the gastric bypass RNY surgery but the problem with that surgery is they completely seal of your old stomach and make a small pouch which becomes the new stomach. My doctor and I thought it would be advisable at that time to do the sleeve instead because with the sleeve the polyps could be monitored and a new endoscopy done every three years.

So we had to apply again and wait another 30 days. I had mentioned before that Cigna said that they only give quick 5 day approvals for those patients that are requesting overnight stays in the hospital. My doctor and hospital require that the surgery be listed as outpatient with 23 hours of observation (which means one overnight stay possible).

To top all that off before I could even apply to Cigna I had to get clearance from my cardiologist because I had an abnornal EKG. I had to do a nuclear stress test which was inconclusive and eventually had to have a heart cathertization done (which cost more than the sleeve surgery). In the end all is good but you can see why it might be dangerous to schedule your surgery before the approval process with all the possibilities of things that can go wrong.

The good news is, is that on this Thursday I am going through the pre-admission testing at Baylor Regional Hospital in Plano, TX and if all goes well I'll have surgery on Thursday July 31st.

Best of luck to all the July Sleevers that have had this done and to all those that will have it done. The process can be confusing and frustrating but well worth it in the end. I propose that someone should start a threat next year of all the July 2014 sleever and have everyone post before and after pictures. No one will remember then the insurance company frustrations and we'll all be able to Celebrate the great accomplishment we all have made in our appearance but most importantly ourt health.

Good luck everyone!.

Go to your nearest urgent care. They can take care of you. That's what I did. Worked for me!

If the staff and surgeon are well versed in the approval process you can be approved in days....granted if all your paperwork is in line. In my case I got my date late June n my surgery was scheduled for 07/24. If my paperwork was complete I would have been approved in 5 days.

They wrote a letter recommending the surgery for you? Find that hard to believe and even harder to believe insurance accepted it.

Can you have the office staff write it and just wait for doc to get a signature?

Or call you ob gyn and have them write it if possible.

Oh my god, you're the best..... I will call my Ob Gyn today and ask if he can do it. He's my doctor also. Why I didn't think of it.

Thanks a lot. I'll let you know if he did it.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
