28-29 BMI'er checkin in, I have surgery in a week...don't worry about it, I struggled as well with the decision to have surgery, and after taking some really really unflattering shots of me in a bathing suit, I am so happy about my decision. Sure I can wait and pile on some more pounds, exercise with knee pain, have crippling asthma, have my first heart attack at 32 (like my mother)-or I could get this under control. ..good luck, do it for you, not anyone else.

I can totally relate to you. I'm 5'4" and weigh 243lbs. Everyone tells me that I'm not big enough to get such an extreme surgery done because my weight is proportioned evenly. They look at me and you can't weigh that much. One dummy even told me "remember what happened to Kanye's momma"...Seriously!? (completely different...I think she died while getting liposuction? )

I have decided that after 3 c-sections, pregnancy weight gain on average of 45lbs., going from a size 12 to a 22 it was time for me to do something for me that will ensure I am here to spent time with my husband, children and future grandchildren.

I applaud anyone who takes their life seriously and actively seeks to be healthier. You go Girl!!! I'm standing with you!

I had the sleeve surgery in June. I was 187 lbs, 5.4" tall, BMI about 31.

I travelled to Jordan to have the op as no doctor would do it in Europe. The best decision of my life. within 6 months I was down to my current weight of about 141 lbs. I'm healthy and happy. I'm a UK size 8, US 4.

I'll try to put a couple of pictures up. :-)

Just because we did not get to a desperate stage of weight, it doesn't mean that we have no right to do whatever we can to make ourselves healthy and happy. Trying all my life and being 46, I knew I couldn't just loose it and keep it off.

Go for it, you will not regret it...

:-)

Yay for taking your life and future into your own hands! I think it's great! Wish I had done it at your stage instead of waiting... Course for me that would have been b4 gastric sleeve was really available and it's been perfect for me so I guess for that I'm glad I waited.

I get what your saying totally. My BMI is 32 & I'm 5'4". I take medication which doesn't help with controlling my weight, but I will be on them for life. Why do I have to wait till I have more weight issues to deal with, so I am having the sleeve on Monday. I know I can't tell people because they will be totally judgemental but as long as my closest family know & are supportive is enough for me. I'm also pale & people like to remind me how "white" I am. Why can't people just mind their own business when it comes to picking fault or differences at others. I hope you well in your journey & know that the Drs wouldn't let you do it either if they thought you weren't a candidate. All the best!

I'm already sleeved but am wondering about someone I know -- how low are the self pay US docs willing to go with the bmi? Is it basically at least 30?

I was a low bmi at the time of surgery and have had really fantastic results. Very little recovery pain. Very few food intolerances. I had stalls here and there but never paid them any mind. They came and went and the weight continued to drop. Right now my daily focus is on hitting my hydration goal (I've always struggled with this) and taking in enough calories to maintain my weight. Who would have thunk...it's become hard work to eat 1000 calories per day!

I am 5'6"

Surgery day I was 197 lbs and size 16 pants.

Eight months later I am 133 lbs and a size 2.

I am coming to grips with the fact that I am a thin woman now. My friend said I looked tiny yesterday, and indeed..in pictures I see that I do look small and tiny. It's be so fun! Also challenging with lots of "head" work. Lots. But I am so happy to have done this at a low bmi. I could have waited a couple of years and gone back up to 240 lbs or waited until I was older and my kids were older. I could have waited until the health problems started showing up. But instead I decided to do something brave and unconventional to end the unhealthy food relationship I had and start with a blank slate. So far it's worked out well.

I am right here with you all. I have a BMI of 30 but at almost 5'10" I tend to carry it well and most people don't see what I see. I've battled obesity for 25+ years and am ready to be happy and healthy in my body. Yes I have had some success with other weight loss programs but it always creeps back!

I can relate too. My surgery is Thursday and I'm 5'3 and weigh 192. My highest weight (not pregnant) was 211 and my pre diet weight was 199. I have been on a diet, clearly unsuccessful, for a decade. In high school, I was overweight after losing my maternal grandmother (graduated high school at 196). I joined weight watchers and got down to 140 and felt amazing! But, I gained it all back and then some slowly over the years. I'm sick of being fat and I can't seem to lose on my own. I workout hard (boot camp style) and I have been monitoring my food intake for so long and tried countless diets. I just can't seem to knock this. I've now been diagnosed with hypertension and hypothyroidism. I don't want my health to deteriorate further. I pray the sleeve is my answer and will help. I'm 30 and want my 30s to be amazing!

Seems like most of the low BMI'ers are either old bands or self pay. I was banded in 2002 and went from 220-147, till band started having issues. After 4 surgeries to repair the band, my doc said NO MORE!!! That was in 2011, and 40 lbs ago!!! This time I started at 180 with a BMI of 32. I was sleeved 2 weeks ago today and am down 15 lbs. A lot of us have very similar stories, although my age is a bit higher! LOL

Good luck to everyone!!!

I was sleeved 3 weeks ago with a bmi of 31. I have had bmi's of anywhere between 24 and 39 over the years because I have never been able to keep any weight off. I struggled every single day since I started dieting 19 years ago. It had taken over my life. I had never heard of the sleeve until I read up about it 3 weeks before booking it! People who have never had a weight problem think the struggle is over once you have lost weight. But for me thats where the hard work begins. If there was anything, surgery included, that could help me with this struggle then I was going to take it. I dont care what other people's opinions are. Im not asking anything from them so its non of their business. We have made a decision to put a stop to our own misery so stuff them!

I am feeling like I haven't really had anything done! I had some pain after the surgery but it wasnt anything near as bad as I had expected. It only lasted for a few days. Ive had no sickness but have felt a little nauseous at times after a liquid meal. If I do too much in the day I can feel a slight pulling pain on my left side but it just feels as sore as touching a bruise. I am on liquids for another week then I move on to pureed. I have no trouble taking liquids but the thought of one more Meal Replacement shake makes me feel ill. They taste far to sweet. I have been drinking a lot of plain milk which satisfies my hunger a little but I need to get back to shakes or I wont be getting enough Vitamins or Protein. Everyone says I will feel the restriction once I start real food. I cant wait! Ive lost 21lb since I started liquids a week before surgery, so 4 weeks today. But its not been easy! Im quite hungry at times and in need of some energy! But I am determined to do each phase exactly as my surgeon tells me! I am determined this will work for me whatever it takes!

Glad to hear you didn't have much pain, I am sooo nervous! Have you tried any unflavored Protein? I like the GENEPRO, barely has a taste in flavored water or gatorade. And you only need 1 tbs for 30g of protein.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
