Newbie- 3 day post op gastric sleeve

Recommended Posts

So I am 3 days out from my sleeve and have a few questions:

Did anyone else have spasms after drinking liquids, especially cold liquids?

The Protein Shakes that I loved before surgery are now repulsive.

I tried yogurt this morning and did okay with it, what did everyone's immediate post op diet consist of?

No one has told me how much I should be 'eating' at one time, does anyone know?

How much weight did you lose your first few weeks post op?

How long were you sore from your larger incision? I had 5 incisions, one of them larger which is the most tender.

Try drinking liquids that are room temperature if the cold bothers you. Post op for 4 weeks we stuck to broth, FF Soup, yogurt, pureed foods, and shakes. At 4 weeks I tried a small piece of soft chicken, choked on it, and stayed on soft food another 2 weeks. Bad experience. Try a different brand of Protein Shake. My husband liked Bariatric Advantage (milky tasting) and I liked EAS powder from Walmart. The best advice we got from our surgeon was: Do not eat 3 meals a day. Do not eat if you are not hungry. Even today, 7 months post surgery, we eat only when hungry, and we don't have sit down dinners at any certain time.

Right after surgery especially, and still today, burping signalled we had eaten enough. Wonderful little reminder lol. Usually if you eat a small amount, you can walk away and be satisfied. Everyone is different with their weight loss, we have learned that well here. The soreness from the small incisions won't last long, we never needed any pain medicine after 24 hours in the hospital. Good luck!!!!

I was sleeved on June 17th.

I feel a pain when I drink too much at a time. So that tells me to wait. I'm only getting in about 40 oz of liquid but my dr says to wait for Protein shakes until 5 days out. So I'm on Clear Liquids.

I'll start clear shakes tomorrow (nectar). Then on day 8 I start full liquid which for me is the Bariatric Advantage shakes. I also get to have Soups with no lumps at all. On day 15 is the soft foods as tolerated and 30 days regular as tolerated.

I have heard once you eat it is about two bites.

My dr also has me start Vitamins once I've seen him for the one week follow up.

I do have pain more on one incision than the others so when it starts to burn I take a pain pill. I take about 3 a day total.

I've been on the treadmill about 15 minutes a day.

I hope you are feeling better every day. Good luck and keep up the hard work.

I have been having some issue with a stabbing burning pain from the largest incision site. The one where the sleeved stomach part was removed. It only occurs when I get up from sitting of try to bend too much. It hurts really bad and it almost feels like my muscle is being ripped. Heat seems to help it subside. I was sleeved on July 22, 2014 so I am about a week and a half post-op. This is the only bad thing that I have encounter thus far.....has anyone else experienced this type of pain?

Hi! I'm doing the sleeve today and not allowed to drink/eat anything for the next 3 days. On the 4th day I'll start a clear liquid diet for 7 days, then fase 2 liquid diet for 7 more days and mashed foods fase 3 for another week. Hope you feel better soon.

Morgan I am three months out and still have some pain at my largest incision site at times. It was very tender right after surgery for me. I was told by my doctor the reason was because that's where he did the most moving around of my insides and that's the hole the stomach came out through. It does get better but we have to remember we did have a major surgery. I am definitely not a doctor so please make sure you contact your doc if it gets bad. Good luck on your recovery and much success on the new you! :)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to. And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed. I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
