Going Back to the Gym

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking I'll go back to the gym tomorrow. I'm 2 weeks post-op and feeling good. I've never had a problem exercising - just a problem with using exercise as an excuse to overeat!

Before my surgery, I went to the gym 5 days a week for at least an hour and a half. Usually 45 minutes of cardio and 45 minutes of weight/strength training. Besides the usual stuff - take it easy, go slow - does anyone have any other advice or wisdom to offer?

I would stay away from weight training until you are at least 6 weeks out. If you feel that you have to lift weights make them very light and work up very slowly.

You don't want to flip your port or cause yourself any unnecessary pain.

Good luck and have fun!

What happens if you flip your port? I've noticed my port is on its side. It's no longer flat! When I lay on my back I can feel the position real good and I can tell it's cocked sideways.

Anybody out there know what i'm talking about? It scares me to think I might need to get it repositioned. Can they do that W/O opening me up again?:think

hey Lisa - unfortuantley I don't think that they can do it without surgery. My port flipped back in feb and I had to have it replaced. It was a day surgery and I was really scared. It was piece of cake. It took maybe 15 minutes total - or else I was just out of it and it only seemed to be that short!! Anyways I wasn't in any pain afterwards or anything. I did feel a little discomfort that evening when I went to bed but nothing no where remotely like the original surgery and that Tylenol couldn't cure!!

OK - I survived!

All I did was 45 minutes on the recumbent stationary bike and about 25 lunges.

I thought that would be good for my first time back. I'll see how I feel and then do the same tomorrow!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
