Supporters and non supporters of my sleeve surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi, my name is Tracey and I have spent the last year researching and getting ready to have sleeve weight loss surgery. My surgery is scheduled for July 10th. I am excited, nervous and scared. I have only told my husband and very close friend that I am doing this. (My closet is freind has been nothing but unsupportive, she makesme question my decision) Several monoths ago when I was deciding if wanted to have this surgery I mentioned to some friends, a co-worker and family and recieved nothing but non supportive responses from "why odont you just diet and exercise, change your life syle and be healther, this is to extreme and trying to take easy way out (I do not think choosing to have sleeve and having 3/4 stomach removed and getting ready to put my body and mind through many diffucult situations for the first several months as I learn to live with sleeve the easy was out) to you are not fat enough and OMG you are removing part of stomach that is just stupid and going to cause nothing but issues rest of life. Then all the negative comments about how will never live a normal life again and having nothing but problems (pain, never eat normal, nauseau, vomtting, pain, always sick. I expect some of these things in the begiining but am hopeful in time and as I learn to live with sleeve things will continually get better. It causes me great stress, anxiety and emotion not to be able to share with close family and friends. Any advice as how to move forward with this.

Sorry to hear it. I have been lucky to have not run into the non-supportive types. I've also kept it fairly close to the vest and have only told a few people.

Is your spouse on board?

Hello, I had the same response from some of my friends who are also heavy-set and I just had to set aside their comments and realize that this is my body and that I was going to do what was best for me. I think that their negativity stems from lack of knowledge about the various bariatric surgeries available. Try not to let it get you down and move forward with what you feel is in your best interest. Good luck to you. I am on day 6 post op and despite being unable to consume all of my Protein and fluids for the day I have no regrets. I just keep telling myself that tomorrow will be better.

My husband is 100% supportive but I do get concerned that he really doesnt not undestand the magnitude of change making.

Thank you so much for that. Letting it get in my head and question if I should do this. You would do it again.

Take him with you to a nut meeting. I took my fiancé and he's learned a lot.

Also tells me no more eating out...huh? We will eat out I'm not cooking every day lol. I'll just eat a bite or 2 off his plate :)

When she starts making comments just tell her that you do not want to talk about it anymore. I have a friend being like that and that topic of conversation is now off limits with her. Try not to let anyone's ignorance and insecurities about the subject cause you so much distress. You are doing what you know is right for you. ;)

I would agree with #9grammy's comments above.

My husband went with me to the day-long behavioral changes class. Then he attended my first meeting with the surgeon. I will probably haul his behind to the pre-surgical meeting. Before all that, he was on board, but the extra information really does help. I show him before / after pictures. I've told him about cross-addiction issues. I've told him how important exercise is. I've asked him NOT to be responsible for my behavior, but to be SUPPORTIVE of my positive behaviors. (There's a big difference and a bright line for me between those two, but he knows where the line is.)

He is just super about all this. But he is a super husband. :)

There are a lot of people in this world who are absolutely certain that they know everything about anything.

They think they're God's gift to everyone else's decision-making challenges, regardless of their background, education, experience, or even simple acquaintance with a single fact. You know the kind: They never met a grey zone they couldn't categorize as black or white.

Unfortunately, I'm related to a lot of those folks. Therefore, they're not privy to my VSG adventure.

I am almost two months post op.... Have never been sick.... Eat so much healthier than I ever have.... Kind of forced to since you can only eat so much. I am healthier than I have been in a long time. Have dropped a total of 56 ponds and am now comfortable going to the gym. I actually feel like it is doing something where as before I would just eat that much more!! Haha don't let other people's fears stop you! The only regret I have is that I didn't do it sooner!!!! Best thing besides my kids and husband that ever happened to me!! It's not an easy journey but once you get past the post op diets ect. And can eat normal your friends will see that it was the best decision you could have made!! Because they will see that you are making better food choices so you can meet your daily requirements!! Protein.... Vitamins.. Ect.

That's good. My wife is 100% behind me as well. Hopefully your hubby will get it when he sees how little you can eat.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
