Too much protein in one sitting leading to hair loss?

Recommended Posts

I haven't had surgery yet but was reading about how people have hair loss possibly from not getting enough Protein in.

I also read that our bodies can really only absorb about 10 to 20 grams of Protein a meal.

If people are trying to get say 40 grams in one meal in ..say in a Protein shake, then 20 to 30 grams of that are pretty much wasted, right? If they think they are getting 60 grams in 2 meals for the day, they might, in reality, be getting only 20 to 40.

So, should we go for smaller amounts of protein spread throughout the day?

I talked to my doctor today and was told that too much Protein is impossible. If your hair is thinning, start taking Biotin. It's online on Amazon in gummies (they are really good) or at any health food store. My doctor highly recommended it for those who worry about Hair loss. Lots of people to not have hair loss though. It's very individualized. But the Biotin can't hurt. It makes your nails stronger and good for your skin!

Hope that helps.

I am not saying we would get too much Protein. I mean that people might THINK they are absorbing more than they actually are because we can only absorb so much per meal. So they might think they are getting 40 grams per meal but are really actually absorbing only 10 to 20. So once they think they got their 60 to 80 in for the day, they quit focusing on the Protein. However, in reality they didn't absorb nearly what they thought they did.

That sounds fair when it comes to doctors. If they tell you 90g or more, they are probably thinking what you'll actually absorb from those 90g. But my doctor did say there's no such thing as too much Protein.

Oh ya I can totally see that Krissy.

I am just wondering if we should try to get like 20 grams per meal and have like 4 or 5 spaced out meals - in order to get better absorption of Protein. This is rather than trying to get like 40 each meal for 2 meals.

I was told you only absorb 20-30 per setting....i drink 30 for Breakfast and i drink 30 for dinner...my lunch and snack should make up any amt i need...i was told to do at least 60

Yea...I'm spreading it out. They want me to get 90g in one day. Doing my best!

@@msfitn2014 - Good, i am glad you are aware of the issue. I have seen it talked about a bit around here but I wasn't sure if doctors and nutritionists were telling patients about absorption rates or not.

@@KrissySMD I know that, prior to this info, I was thinking about how to get the most Protein in a single serving that I could. So I was looking for shakes that had like 40 grams a serving thinking it would be easier to choke them down. Now, I will cut the scoop in half which will be both more economical and more palatable to boot.

There is a lot of differing views on this. My doctor doesn't buy that it must be spread out to be absorbed and even directed me to an article that I shared on here. I think folks should go by their docs and not assume your doc is not telling you something.

My doctor also do not believe there is a a limitation to how much Protein your body can absorb....he has said repeatedly that if you consume Protein, your body absorbs just as its given...

Being an ex personal trainer and nutritionist I can tell you my thoughts, your body cannot absorb more than 45grams of Protein at any given time. And in fact it is a waste of calories. Any additional protein will put both your liver and kidney at high risk. It's also a well

Known fact that you can gain a kinda coating of protein around your kidneys ( a coating of fat ) so it is definitely dangerous. I have worked with people, albeit 4 yrs ago that have had kidney issues because of this same reason. Of course feel free to google it for a second opinion. :-)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
