How Long til Back to Work?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! This is my first post - so glad I found this forum! My PCP just sent my referral to the surgeon and I am waiting for my first appointment. I've done tons of research but I am curious how much time you took off from work after surgery. I was thinking I'd like to be off during the clear and full liquid phases so I wouldn't have to deal with that at work. Can you tell me your experience, please?

Thanks!

Carol

My surgeon says normally people take off two weeks, but it also depends on how physically demanding your job is.

Thanks for the responses! Three weeks is what I was thinking (and hoping) for. I thought it might be easier once I was eating more normally.

I took off 3 weeks and today was my first day back and it was great, I was not tired and had a good day.

My job is physically demanding and I will most likely have to take a month off. I work as a nurses assistant.

My original plan was to take just over a week off (7 business days), then working from home for 3 weeks. I felt so good that I started working from home after 4 days then went back to the office after 2 weeks.

I'd plan for the worst and hope for the best.

I took six days off. I have a desk job where I could easily eat and drink during the day.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
