Antidepressants after surgery

Recommended Posts

This topic is one I'm really worried about. I just tried to go off abilify (for the 3rd time). I made it longer this time but then had a fibro flare and, frankly, I was close to suicidal before I started the abilify back up. I need my mood stabilized. I won't be having surgery until late August/early September but I was very happy to find that I could do liquid abilify if I need to be off pills for too long. We talked a little about it before but now I'm going to really make sure I know exactly what I can and cannot take post surgery per my doctor.

I went off cymbalta after surgery in January. Recently went back on though. Serious stress going on and I'm not coping well.

I was surprised he dropped them too and my brain has been a little (ok -- maybe a lot) fuzzy but I feel ok. I still don't really understand why he did it because I had stayed on the pills the week before (first 6 days after surgery). I think some of the brain fuzz may just be the super low cal diet, too. Maybe part of it was because he knows I'm working from home part time this week.

I'll see how it goes for the rest of the week and what he says and make a decision whether to pick the meds back up or stay off. I've been on Wellbutrin for 8 years and Lamictal (mood stabilizer) for about 6 and have been very well managed but I have talked with the psych a lot lately about trying to go off. So many things in my life are better now than when I started the meds. I've drop 260 pounds since I started meds in the form of an ex-husband who made my life miserable! lol

I was on both of those too at one point. I want to go off tegretol, but Pdoc is a little nervous about it. He says I'm doing so well that he doesn't want to rock the boat. I'm happy you're doing so well. Glad you got rid of all that extra weight too! He was just keeping you down!

I'm going in for my surgery on June 26th and I have talked to my doc about my anti depressants. I switched to liquid lexapro and they gave me a script for time released generic Wellbutrin. I do worry about my depression and not being able to take solid pills for a while. How long after surgery do we have to wait to take pill form meds?

Kimteehee,

I just had surgery 4 days ago, and though I was off meds while in the hospital, the night I got home I started back on Wellbutrin. It probably depends on your doctor, but my doctors only request was that I crush the pill and it in something (pretty gross - but better than no meds!) I think that if you just keep in touch with your surgeon about this and don't be afraid to ask questions when in the hospital that you will be fine. Good luck on your surgery! You can do this!

I never stopped taking pills. The ones I do take go down easier with a mouthful of shake or chewed up food. Never have been able to swallow the fish oil pearls post op. Miss Tummy rejects them and gives them back right away. I am not about to start cod liver oil. I will just eat fish more often.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
