QUESTION: If U had gastric bypass & U had 2 do all over again verses the SLEEVE would U?

Recommended Posts

I had RNY on 5/30/13. I have had a great experience and have no regrets. I had no complications, a quick, relatively easy recovery, and a very successful weight loss. I started at 233lbs and currently weigh 118lbs. All my health problems have cleared up and my joint and back pain are gone. My labs are perfect. I'm in the best health of my life. My WLS team has been wonderful. I followed their instructions to the letter which I believe is key to success. If I had it to do over again, would I? The answer is 'HELL, YES!'

Since I had no GERD or reflux issues, my surgeon left the decision entirely up to me. After several weeks of research on both surgeries, I decided on the RNY, and I have no regrets.

A few of my reasons for choosing RNY: first, there is long term data behind the RNY, but not enough on the sleeve. Second, the RNY holds you more accountable, meaning that the consequences for cheating are more severe (dumping, etc.). Third, an acquaintance had the sleeve and after about a year started gaining weight because she was able to eat more (especially more of the wrong foods) without those consequences I mentioned. It was a big struggle for her to regain control and lose the weight she gained.

If I had it to do all over again, I would still choose the RNY. Good luck to you! :)

I think I would have opted for the gastric sleeve surgery again if I had to do it all over again.I was in a terrible condition. My weight was killing me,but now I feel great losing weight after the surgery.I also have a sweet tooth and that is what was adding to my woes.I think I have no regrets at all with my surgery.

Hi I first had the sleeve, lost weight but didn't loose enough went from 136kgs down to 105 kgs and couldn't get lower and then started going up again. When I first went to my doctor I had originally asked for the gastric bypass and he talked me into the sleeve. Anyway I went back to him after a year and a half I was back at 113 kgs I had the bypass done and that was 12 months ago and I'm down to 91 to 93 kgs feeling so much better and yes if I had to do it all over again I would in a heartbeat. In saying that if they said I had to have the operation done every two years I wouldn't hesitate. I feel so good so healthy again it all comes down to your search and make sure you thoroughly research your surgeon and make sure they are good at what they do mine is excellent. If you want to email me for any other details I am in Brisbane Australia. Renshi42@hotmail.com

I have not had any surgery yet but process of elimination I am choosing the RNY....or rather it has chosen me. We have similar issues. I am 53, with terrible mobility issues related to arthritis and weight. I also have GERD and a hiatal hernia. Otherwise I am in good health. I credit good genes ( because I can't take the credit) for low blood pressure, good heart, and low cholesterol. But I am so limited in life because of my knees and hips. I have no doubt at all that WLS is the answer for me. I lost 135 pounds 5 years ago and began regaining after a hip injury. I had 2.5 glorious years of being active and I want that back.

I see by another post you are due for surgery in a few days....hoping everything goes great for you. I am about 6 months behind you.

I had RNY I May of 2013. Weighed 300# on day of surgery. Was a mild diabetic, high cholesterol, blood pressure and knee and hip pains. Today, I am at 159, 9# from my goal with no diabetes, regular blood pressure and cholesterol and I can walk miles with no pain. I am 45 this year and I still believe it wasn't right for me up until last year even though I struggled my entire life. I haven't had sweets in over year, fried foods either. I don't miss them and probably could eat them in moderation, but why. You have to follow the doctors orders. But it was for me the best decision I have ever made. Good luck. My surgeon was very clear this is what I needed and I believe I owe him my life.

I am having a sleeve revision to RNY on the 22nd August. I had the sleeve and a hiatus hernia repair 29 june 2012. I don't regret the sleeve as it has help me lose about 30kg (40kg but gained weight). I can do heavy work like lift big rocks and logs in my garden, walk fast (can do a km in about 8min 30secs), play on the playground with my daughter and other kids, clean the house without getting puffed out).

About a month ago I went back and saw my surgeon. I told him that I feel like a failure - eat slider food and drink calorie laden drinks because I don't get pain when I do, if I ate what he wants me too I can get a few tablespoons in or maybe half a cup, even then I might vomit. I a still on Nexium (since 2005 pregnancy) and still get reflux. I had a massage and threw up bile in my mouth, had to swallow it so I wouldn't vomit on the floor.

So with the reflux issues an what was found in a barium swallow and endoscope, I am getting the RNY and a cardioplasty (to fix hiatus hernia).

I don't regret the sleeve. However, even thought I am scared I am grateful to hear positive comments from others :)

I got the sleeve and then got the bypass. I had major complications with the sleeve, I had bad GERD before surgery and afterwards it was so bad that I couldn't even eat solid food. I have a thread with my whole story if you are interested in reading it but I just got the bypass this last Friday and feel amazing! I wish I would have done this first, the recovery is going very smoothly and I don't have any pain with eating like I did right after the sleeve. There are other people here with similar stories who got the sleeve then revised to a bypass and our general consensus is that we wish we would have done the RNY sooner! I can't wait to make up for the two years I spent in pain after the sleeve with happy and healthy new experiences :)

If you are at all worried about GERD I would do some serious research into why the bypass is better suited to you, I wish someone would have warned me a long time ago..

Just throwing this out there (and I am really glad everyone had such positive experiences with bypass!) but since you posted this in the gastric bypass success story section you are likely to get mostly answers that people loved their gastric bypass surgery. It might be helpful to head over to the sleeve section and ask a similar question if you want some other perspectives :-)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
