I'm Nicole and new to this site

Hi Nicole,

I dont' want to disillusion you too badly, but we were fully insured and were were about $1300 out of pocket.

If this will be an issue for you, perhaps you can start a special account so it can build up slowly whilst you learn about the banding.

Thanks for the welcome!

I spoke to my DH this afternoon (he had had a few drinks so was in a very happy mood, so I thought I would take advantage of it tongue.gif Anyway, his reaction surprised me. He said he was surprised I hadn't thought of this much earlier (I told him I had but I wasn't as serious as I am now).

He does have lots of questions about everything- mainly why I think this will be any different to all the other times I have tried to loose weight. He definitely wants to go to an information seminar with me to hear more from the professionals. biggrin.gif

I have showed him lots of lap band forums and blogs I have found but he isn't really into reading so would prefer someone to talk to him. I am more than fine with this.

He does have slight concerns with the costs involved as we don't know how much we will be out of pocket yet, but I said this will improve my health greatly and it will be all worth it.

So it looks like I am joining the lap band brigade:thumbup:

Oh I didn't realise it could be claimed at tax time too. Has anyone used their superannuation for payments also- I think I recall it being mentioned on another site. We always get a nice bonus at tax time thanks to Family tax benefits so this is also another option I could use.

Coo- We must have been posting at the same time. If you are referring to me thinking I would be only $5 out of pocket that is wrong. I just went back and read my original post again and realised I left the k off my $5. So really I expect to be about $5000 out of pocket.

Whoohoo Nic! There is no telling how you well you will be once you are a bandit. Just tell hubby that what you save in food will help pay the op bills. Using my Tax Refund for mine. Its a wonderful investment for a healthier, happier new you!

Welcome to all new members!!

I've had lap surgery before to remove my gallbladder. Its no different to any other surgery - you get knocked out and when you come round, you have pain, the difference is its a lot safer than opening you right up. One word of warning though. I had a drainage tube inserted and when it came time to remove it, the stupid nurse tried pulling it out without opening the suction valve. Its like she was trying to suck my insides out through a straw!! MAKE SURE THEY OPEN THE VALVE!!

My partner is really supportive, but against the idea of surgery to start with. He couldn't understand why I couldn't just diet and exercise to lose the weight. He did some research and came back with some not so great statistics. But he came with me to my first surgeon's appointment and when he realised they thought I would be a candidate he started to change his mind. His main worry was something might happen while I'm under and he'd lose me. He has since come around and now fully supports me 100% but it took a bit of work and a lot of determination on my part to assure him I'm planning a long and happy life!

If your husband at first isn't so enthralled, don't take it personally. They often just see the extreme of needing surgery rather than focusing on the benefits. Give him time and he'll come round.

Michelle

Not that I know of bindi, but you could just start one. Also, there are various yahoo groups. I'm in one for Australia but also Brisbane. I know there's a Sydney group you could look at joining.

Hey Nickers,

I also live in "Crimebourne" , I was banded back in Nov 2006 , then lost about 30 Kg very quickly to my goal weight , i have recently slowly put back 10 kg ,s due to very bad food choices ( chocolate, ice cream, ect ) .

Although i am down hearted at the moment i can never talk enough about the many benefit,s of the band.

Good luck , and if you want to talk, PM me and we can meet.

:)

Why are you making an appointment for the psych, Sunwyse? I thought it was only our US friends that had to jump through that hoop for their insurance. I didn't know there were any insurance companies in Aus that were requiring that. Or are you just going for your own benefit, not because it's part of the requirement? If so, good for you, they are very useful and most of us have issues around food that could benefit from some professional advice.

If I am not wrong, she is seeing the same surgeon as I went to, and he requires for his bandsters to be seen. It's manily to see if the bandster to be will comply with the band rules. Not anything to do with the health funds. Although most funds do pay for the visit.

I had to see one...it is part of the appt process with getting the band done with Lapsurgery Australia. You basically just discuss what your expectations are and what eating habits you may have and how you will cope with the band. It was a psychologist and she was very nice.

No insurance requirements I think they just like to make sure that the people getting banded are across what is going to happen and assess their belief of your ability to cope post surgery and who might need extra support!!

Ok, after 4 months, and 2 fills, I've been suffering my first taste of "stuck" food - chicken (from 4 hours ago). i've tried walking about, and sipping hot tea. Every drop of Fluid I put in comes right back up again. Although I'm very thirsty, I guess I'll go to bed and hope I can get a cup of tea down in the morning :-< Its not a lot of fun, but my own fault - guess I ate too big a bite and didn't chew enough (it wasn't even breast.

Hi everyone, I was banded on 6 Oct 2007. I've been one of the slow losers - partly due to poor food choices, partly to the fact that I've continued to drink alcohol. Feeling particularly down at the moment as haven't shifted an ounce for a long while. I was interested to read about the requirement of some doctors that you see a psych to find out whether you will stick to the rules. I guess if I'd done that then I wouldn't have been banded (if I'd told the truth).

I'm going to see my surgeon in a fortnight and I will be making an appt with the dietician. I must say it depresses me to think that I always going to be on a restricted diet - I had it in my head that I would lose weight automatically but it isn't really the case. I wonder sometimes why the band is promoted as a solution when in fact if you're a person who didn't stick to diets well in the first place it's not really going to change anything. I predict a huge turnaround in the success rates of the band in the next five years as people who have had it done start to put the weight back on - hope I'm wrong.

Sorry folks - lots going on at the moment. Just re-read my post and realised how miserable and negative it sounds. I know not everyone else is in the same position so good luck to those of you who haven't been done yet and congrats to everyone who has lost heaps of weight.

Better stay out of here until I'm in a better frame of mind!!!!

Any bandsters in Sydney want to get together?

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
