Excited to get sleeved, but afraid I will fail

Recommended Posts

Hi I'm a newbie from the great state of Texas. I got approved, by my insurance company, for WLS a few weeks ago but I have been struggling with my decision to have myself sleeved. The past few weeks I've been going back and forth deciding between gastric bypass or gastric sleeve. I've finally decided to get sleeved. I go in for my KGB..GED..EGD...or whatever you call it, in late June. (I know it's EGD, but I joke a lot. Please have a sense of humor when you read any of my post)

Now where was I?

My main struggle is overeating. I'm afraid that I can get this operation and end up regaining a lot of weight. I have a coworker who had the bypass surgery last year and he's already regaining some of his weight. He is eating all of the wrong food. My coworker told everybody about his WLS. I heard all the negative comments he had to deal with. A lot of people told him he would end up gaining the weight back. It pissing me off that he's going to prove them right. Even the people that give him encouragement is laughing at him behind his back. Well it also don't help that he can be an assh#le to everybody every now and then. ANYWAY...where was I?

Watching what my coworker and a few other people went thru, I've decided not to tell anyone about my WLS. I told my wife and that's it. I don't want to deal with the negativity. Plus I don't want to fail and give everybody something to talk about. I'm not just referring to my coworkers, but my family and friends also.

I don't want to be a topic of conversation, I just want to be healthy.

My main worry about getting a VSG is that I will fail. I've been reading a lot of the post in this forum for guidance.

Y'all have answered a lot of my questions and made me secure in my decision to get a VSG. Thank you guys and girls for all of your words of encouragement to each other. Even though you guys weren't talking to me, you really were talking to me. Capisce?

I look at the surgery as an extra tool in the long journey to my goals. It is only a fraction of the solution. I still have to make the right food choices, get fit thru exercise and deal with the why of my eating.

You might want to consider "the Beck Diet Solution" by Judith Beck. It is not a diet but a way of re-training your brain and it's relationship to food. My surgeons office recommends it and uses it in the support meeting.

No matter what you choose, it will be your "work" to get you to where you want to be.

I too have a friend who has lost about 60 but has stalled for 6 months and still has more to loose. From the start mere weeks after surgery she was making horrible food choices and continues to do so. If we don't fix the what we eat and the why our success will be affected.

I am scheduled to be sleeved on June 18th. You can not thinking about failing...if you want to succeed you will!!! My sister was sleeved about 1 1/2 years ago and she failed. She went back to eating all all the same foods that got her FAT in the first place. WLS is only a TOOL and we need to make that tool work for us. I pray everyday as my date gets closer that I don't fail. But Ive already started changing all my diet and moving more. I use her failure and negativity as fuel for me to succeed. :) Good luck

I understand your concern. I too am afraid of it as well. I know two that have failed and one that is on their way. I have struggled with weight my whole life. I love this site. It gives you encouragement that you can do it. The surgery is a tool, as well as this site. I believe if you use the tools and keep your mind focused your goals can be achieved. Positive thoughts equal positive outcomes... Stay positive. Stay strong and keep telling your self you can do i!

Do you have a date yet?

I also have a sister who failed she lost 100lbs and then went right back to her old eating habit and has regained most of it.. I am going to use her as an example of what NOT to do. I have already started looking for new ways to deal with stress. I pray that by making this huge of a decision to actually change my anatomy will be motivation alone for me not to fall back into those bad habits and relapse!

I am in the same boat, I had initial consult today, and am very scared about the same thing. I have been in rehab for BED (Binge Eating Disorder). My friends from there have voiced the same concerns. I also will loose my wife if I go through with it. But if I don't go through with it, I will die in next 10 years. Classic catch 22

Thank you guys for your words of encouragement. I also have a relative that have had WLS and gained it all back. I just don't want to finally get rid of this weight. I know a WLS is just a tool & it's ultimately up to me to change my eating habits. Hell... I need this surgery because I have a terrible eating habit.

I haven't got a surgery date yet. We're going to set that date after I have my EGD at the end of June. When I talk to my doctor I'm going to ask him to use the smallest bougie he can find to make my sleeve.

Who isn't afraid of failure? We're all here for the same reason. I also, am not telling many people about wls . I also have a family member who has had the sleeve, lost about 50 pounds the first 6 months, has about another 40 to go, but is starting to regain. It's just a tool for us to help us. We are still accountable for what we do with it! Good luck to all!

The rules for eating are simple. Follow then and the weight will come off. If you insist on bad food choices, welll you know what will happen. Belong to a support group and learn to cook the correct foods. Sure there will be road blocks , but others in a good support group will be able to help you though. This process is all about you, be selfish and do the right things. The positives are very good for your health.

Look, you know this isn't a magic pill, right? You've seen, first hand, what NOT TO DO, right? So you're already better off than your co-worker. As far as the fear of failure, if you're like most of us, you've tried and failed multiple diets, but our desire for a healthier life keeps us from quitting, it's just that we finally realize the traditional diet and exercise doesn't work for us long term. I'm like you, I'm always hungry, and I think I eat a pretty healthy balance, so I'm hoping the WLS will manage the portions and I can concentrate on nutrtion and mental hunger. The WLS changes the playing field but if we don't do our part, we can't expect succes. You can do it! Good luck!

I am in the same boat -- the reason I need the sleeve is because I can't follow the rules and I make terrible food choices and overeat. There's no way to know ahead of time if the Sleeve will be an effective tool for me -- will it be enough to give me the ability to make the right choices? I have no idea. All I know is that I can't do it now, pre-surgery. It's one thing to be aware of the rules and understand them -- most of us already have a very good handle on this from years of dieting. It's another thing to be able to follow the rules. I'm really hoping that the sleeve will allow me to succeed in following the rules. Good Luck to you, and to those of you who have already had the sleeve and making it work, thanks for the all the helpful posts and Congrats!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
