How did people react to your weight loss?

Recommended Posts

I am one if those people that didn't tell many people that I had or was going to be having WLS surgery. I actually told everyone but my mom and kids that I was going on vacation. Today I am 7 days post op. Just wondering for all you veterans, if you kept your procedure a secret what were people's reaction when they actually noticed a vast amount of weight loss?

Hi there. I am 3 weeks post-op today. I also did not tell anyone but my husband, kids and my sister about my WLS. So far I have lost 27 pounds, but I haven't really seen anyone yet. I have a family bridal shower on Saturday, so I'm wondering if anyone will notice anything yet. So far it just looks like I've lost a little weight, so nothing really significant yet, but I was wondering the same thing. When it is really noticeable and people start to ask, I am just going to say that I have been following a high Protein, low carb diet and exercising. That will not be a lie. I hope you are feeling well so far and do very well with this. So far I have been feeling great and I have been very happy with my decision to go through with this. Good luck!

I also didn't tell anyone but the clser family members, and I work with about 150 people. I've lost about 30 pounds so far, and all anyone has said is how wonderful I look. They know I had some surgery (I just said "I needed some gastric surgery to correct a long standing problem") and so they're treating it as part of my recovery.

Maybe you can say you took some time to focus on YOU during your vacation and made some new goals and changes needed to get there. Heck - it's true!

I totally changed my eating and started exercising 2-1/2 months before my surgery (after initial appt with surgeon) so I had lost 35 lbs before surgery. It has been 9 weeks since surgery and I've lost another 35 since then. I think that helped ward off some of the attention.

Congratulations on your weight loss this far. I am down 10 lbs 7-days post op. I still get fatigued and heartburn, but everyday gets better. Haven't noticed any change in appearance or cloths yet but I know that day will come soon.

All of my friends and family know about my surgery. It's a whole lot easier and less stressful than having to lie to them. But I see a lot of clients only 1-2 times/year, so they are shocked when they see me. Not a day has gone by over the last couple months that I don't get a comment about my weight loss. (Seriously...EVERY day) Depending on the person and/or situation, I may tell them I had surgery or if it's not appropriate I try to brush off their comments and change the subject. There are some, however, that keep pushing and pushing for answers. I've been asked if I've been sick or even if I have cancer. I'm just waiting to get the nerve up to blurt out I started doing meth to some of the nosier ones.

I find that after losing 89 pounds, most people are smart and just say 'you look great' or something like that. I sometimes run into people that I don't know, but have seen me before surgery and actually ask if I had weight loss surgery. Maybe because it's more common these days they think that it's ok to ask? Still feel a little awkward when I don't really know them, lol.

I'm not a vet but am down 120+ pounds in 5.5 months. I've told very few people about my WLS so I've had lots of explaining going on, especially after exceeding about 100 pounds.

My explanation is that I had started having some health problems and became determined to do something about it . Then I say that I eat like a bird and run like a deer . No lies so far -- I just left out the minor detail of being sleeved.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
