So how is everyone telling the friends/family they don't see very often? Or are you not? It's just a weird subject to bring up, but I don't want friends to be upset that I didn't tell them. I think my parents are slightly embarrassed - they love me, but it's even harder for them to let people know about the surgery. I feel like I need a list of who knows so I can avoid the super awkwardness the next time I see them! Any thoughts are appreciated!

I am telling very few people! My immediate family and a few close friends. I am trying to keep the girls at work in the dark, but I know they will wonder where I am for 4 weeks! I really don't know why I am hiding it. Im not ashamed of it, but I just don't want to deal with the questions before the surgery.

You are off work for 4 weeks? Just curious why? I am under the impression that there is little down time. Am I wrong??

Just tell people you are watching what you are eating...that's my plan.

Yes, my Doctor reccomends 3-4, and my boss was fine with 4, so I am taking it! I don't feel too bad about it, because our company requires you to take one week of vacation before your sick leave will kick in. I have tons of sick leave because I've never taken any.

Oh no, I wasn't implying you were taking too much, etc, etc...I was more so worried about myself only take the week off. :/

That doesn't seem like much recovery time!! But I have read other posts and people are going back to work after a week or two. I bet you will do fine! :D A friend of mine that had this done said she was ready to go back after two weeks.

I told my boss( cause I'm taking time off from work) few close friends and my husband and kids. My extended family live in NY. not telling them before surgery. I will be going there 4 wks post-op, I will tell them then

Sounds like a great plan! 4 weeks after surgery, and by how good you will look, it should be easy to tell them! Best of luck!

As long as your company will work with you then I'm sure you'll be fine! It's all about surrounding yourself with the right foods/drinks, and make sure you are listening to your body. If your employer is accepting, then I'm sure they will understand if you need to take extra brakes, or even leave a little early the first few days until you are 100%

My doctor's office automatically fills out the short term disability paperwork for 6 weeks off. My work is very supportive, so it's up to me when I want to go back. The only catch is that I only get 60% of my paycheck while I'm out so I'm basically going to stay off as long as I can afford to. I have a crazy stressful job with mountains of work that will be waiting for me when I return. I know it will be 10 hour days full of stress when I go back, and I just want to make sure that I am going to be up for it! Right now I'm thinking 4 weeks off should get my mind and body in a good place :)

I plan to take 4-6 weeks, depending on the lifting restriction. I have to be able to lift 50lbs. I'm looking forward to some time off. this is my time to focus in me and my recovery. Made it through day 1 of the pre-op diet! It wasn't too bad. Have a headache from lack of caffeine, lol. Where is everybody having surgery? I'm in charlotte nc

I don't work full time.. My surgery is on tue the 10th and I plan on working on the next Monday and a trip on Tuesday.

3 of my friends had the VSG. They were all up and going within a week. Who knows.

I'm allowed to have coffee or black tea so at least no headaches from that.

My surgery is local. I'm in Orange County CA

Struggling today with liquids. I have headache that won't go away.

I already started giving up the caffeine now. I don't think I could survive on the pre-op diet with a killer headache.

I'm having my surgery about an hour south, just north of Flint, Michigan. It's a bit of a drive, but the hospital has a great program, and my PCP wasn't a fan of the local hospitals.

Tomorrow is my last appointment (I just need my PCP to give final surgical consent - she's been helping me through everything so I know she will!), and then I am all clear for everything!

I have a killer headache and I'm still drinking caffeine. Hurts to keep my head upright. Point being you might get a headache the first day or 2. I'm dreading trying to function at work tomorrow. I did drive 330 mikes today with 2 kids and a puppy.

I know this sounds strange but was told to suck on dill pickle to get some of the juice and it helps with headaches of cutting back. Follow it with Water. Something about the sodium and vinegar in pickles alleviates headaches and cramps. Let me know how it works!!!

I been doing chicken broth but I might try pickles. Might be hard not to eat it though.

I took an excedrin and feel better.

June 16th for me. I'm right in the midst of the dreaded food funeral state of mind. And I cant even think about the surgery without feeling stressed out. I've taken 4 weeks off after surgery but if I'm up to it I'll go back earlier, I'm just worried about all the physical work like massage and waxing etc but facials etc should be fine. I'm so busy at work up until the day before surgery, that the time off will be welcomed

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
