Hypothyroid & sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hi all, this is my first post on the site. I am currently in the process of obtaining a sleeve surgery, I'm hoping for a July date (tomorrow is my last physical supervised weight loss visit, yeah!). Anyway, I technically have no thyroid after having radiation and have a heck of a time losing weight because of it. In fact I have never lost anything more than a few pounds since losing my thyroid. I'm worrying that even with the surgery I still won't be able to lose weight. Does anyone have experience with the sleeve surgery and no thyroid that they can share?

What did your surgeon say about it? I am hypothyroid and losing at a steady rate. Slow and steady.

I had my thyroid removed and have radioactive iodine treatment. My surgery is May 27 and I'm concerned about this as well. I'll let you know how this goes for me.

I still have my thyroid technically but dr said it is virtually useless and I'm almost fully relying on Armour. Been sleeved for two months, lost 35 lbs pre-op (over 5 months) and 31 lbs post op. Slower than many who started at my weight but I'm pleased. I'm smaller than I've been in 15 years!

beth_d,

I can't answer the question regarding if you have no thyroid. I've been on a dosage of .088 mg of Synthroid for years because of Hypothyroidism.

At my last support group meeting, one of the weight loss surgeons said: "This is a marathon, not a sprint." He said your body may lose slowly but that's OK because you're in it for the long haul.

Welcome to bariatric pal,

Kathleen

Thank you very much for your responses. I haven't talked to my surgeon about this specifically but I definitely plan to.

I had thyroid cancer at 16 and 3 years of annual inpatient radiation treatments. They completely removed my thyroid. I had a recurrence at 35 and had another inpatient radiation treatment. My current dose is .224, I take 2 .112's a day. I haven't been tested since my sleeve surgery on March 19, 2014.

I'm going to call my dr to see if I should gets labs done. Never occurred to me my weight loss might effect the dose.

Thanks for sharing.

Laurie

I have a puny thyroid. On Synthroid 150mcg and Cytomel 25mcg. I have lost 45 lbs since 12/23. It has really slowed down the last month.

Happy dales how much weight have you lost since you had surgery? I had thyroid cancer too. Had my thyroid removed October 2012. I'm on 175 synthroid.

Hi,

I've lost 62.5 pounds. Last week I only lost 2.5 because I'm having issues with getting my Protein in. The nut told me when I increase the Protein I'll start losing more. My avg per week was 5 pounds.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
